Academic and Applied Research
The division of River Engineering is concerned with hydraulic and hydrological problems in natural aquatic systems and engineered structures for water resource utilisation.
Important applications include effects of high-flows in streams and rivers, erosion and safety of embankment dams, hydrological and micro-biological processes in treatment wetlands and waste repositories in bedrock groundwater related to storage of CO2 and high-level radioactive waste.
The research focuses on basic issues of importance to our understanding of fundamental hydraulic and hydrological processes, like erosion of sediments and transport of solute subtsances. We perform field investigations, laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling.
