SITE 26-27.2009 firar Edmund Husserls 150-årsdag med en översättning av hans legendariska brev från 1907 till Hugo von Hofmannsthal, där möjligheten av den rena konsten och den rena fenomenologin står spel. Nicolas Smith bidrar med en essä om tidsbegreppets roll i fenomenologin. Temasektionen är tillägnad arvet efter Manfredo Tafuri och Venedigskolan, och den kritiska teorins status i den samtida arkitekturen, med essäer av Rixt Hoekstra, Pier Vittorio Aureli och Andrew Leach. Numret innehåller också texter av Bert Vanderbussche om Jeff Wall och David Clearbout, av Lars-Erik Hjerström Lappalainen om Robert Smithsons konstkritik, och ett konstprojekt av Carl Michael von Hausswolff. -- 19:00 diskuterar Thordis Arrhenius och Sven-Olov Wallenstein om arvet efter Manfredo Tafuri och möjligheten till en kritisk arkitekturteori idag.

PHD-TJÄNSTER + KONSULT
Lunds universitet ledigkungör fyra doktorandanställningar vilka samtliga kommer att vara knutna till CASE, Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environment. Tre vid medicinska fakulteten och en vid Lunds tekniska högskola. Tre doktorander sökes i ”Vårdvetenskap med inriktning arbetsterapi” och en doktorand i ”Trafik och väg”. Anställningen i ”Trafik och väg” innebär forskning och forskarutbildning inom ramen för ett forskningsprojekt om tillgänglighet/avändbarhet/trygghet för äldre personer då man vistas i utemiljön. Viktiga frågeställningar är om och på vilket sätt förändringar i miljön, liksom om tränings-/rehabiliteringsmöjligheter för äldre personer, kan påverka upplevelsen av utemiljön och mobiliteten. Doktorandprojektet ingår i ett longitudinellt forskningsprojekt där äldre personer själva haft möjlighet att påverka vilka åtgärder som genomförts i utemiljön i deras bostadsområde. Doktorandprojektetet innebär ny datainsamling samt analys av och jämförelser med tidigare insamlade data liksom jämförelser med andra befintliga databaser. UN-HABITAT is looking for a consultant to develop an urban module for the Environmental Education Resource Pack (EERP). The urban/slums module's focus is on integration of urban children in the Environmental Education Resource Pack (EERP), which is an education tool for children with a focus on environment and climate change. This product is considered as one of the inter-agency products coming out of the Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (UNESCO, UN-HABITAT, UNICEF, etc). The work of the consultant would focus on developing the urban/slums activity learning module (lesson plans)based on a work/model already done by UNICEF on other "climatic zones" (arid, humid, rain- forest, dry-land, etc). The consultant should have a grasp of both the work of UN-HABITAT on urban environment/slums and be able to relate this to environmental education and prepare a learning activity module (lesson plans) along those lines. FONDATION LE CORBUSIER: GRANT FOR YOUNG RESEARCHER
For the coming academic year 2009-10, the Fondation Le Corbusier will attribute one grant to a young researcher wishing to devote his/her studies to Le Corbusier's work. The research proposals should concern primarily the aspects of his work that have not been the subject of sufficient in-depth research, or, in the case of areas already studied, propose an original approach (multi-disciplinary, comparative, transverse, etc.). All of the aspects of Le Corbusier's work are acceptable as research subjects: building works, unrealized architectural or urban projects, furniture, the plastic arts - painting, drawing, tapestry, exhibitions, etc. - writings (published or not); biographical research contributing to an understanding of the man and his work may also be proposed. Applicants must be young (maximum age 35), working toward a master's or postgraduate degree (fine arts, architecture, history, urbanism, art history, law, etc.), and preferably working in a research laboratory or similar scientific facility. -- Applications should be received by June 30, 2009. ECLECTIC TECH CARNIVAL (/ETC) i Umeå 8-12 juni 2009. /ETC är ett ca veckolångt läger som fokuserar på genus- och jämställdhetsfrågor i relation till teknik, konst och samhällsutveckling. Lägret kommer att samla kvinnor som är intresserade av att använda teknologi och konst för att inspireras till och sprida engagemang samt politisk och social medvetenhet. /ETC är ett ”on the road-event” som flyttar runt och arrangeras på ett nytt ställe varje år. Det startades av Genderchangers, en organisation i Holland som verkar för att bryta könsstereotypa normer kring teknik och peppa kvinnor att bli mer aktiva i samhället genom teknologi, konst och gräsrotsamarbeten. Under den 5 dagar långa serien av workshops, paneldiskussioner, framföranden och besök hos inspiratörer kommer en stor bredd av deltagare från olika bakgrunder och länder dela kunskaper och erfarenheter samt mötas i frågor och praktiker som rör internationella samarbeten på gräsrotsnivå. Symposium: INTEGRATION OF DESIGN AND SCIENCE: LIGHT, MATERIALS, COLOUR AND ENVIRONMENT, Wednesday, 24th June 2009, 9.00-17.00, Wren Room at the RIBA. The symposium will highlight recent and innovative work in light, materials and colour related to design, technology and the environment. Call for Papers: WRITING ARCHITECTURE: A SYMPOSIUM ON ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM AND THE WRITTEN REPRESENTATION OF ARCHITECTURE, Saturday August 15, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Papers and presentations are invited on the subject of written architectural criticism and the written representation of architecture. This is the first of two planned events, where the first will be a relatively informal workshop, intended to discuss broad issues and map out the parameters, key questions, case studies and scope of the second, more formal event in February 2010, which will result in a book publication. The events are convened by Dr Naomi Stead, a UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the ATCH (Architecture Theory Criticism History) research group at the University of Queensland. Possible topics could include, but are not limited to: WRITING: When and how is writing an architectural practice? What is gained in translation, and what is lost, when architecture is represented in writing? What is the critical influence of writing, as itself a medium, technique, and mode of representation, in architectural criticism? What happens when architectural criticism becomes explicitly or implicitly literary, a mode of art practice in itself?; CONVENTION: What are the genre conventions of writing in architecture, and written architectural criticism? What do these conventions arise from, and what would it mean to bend or break them? OCCUPATION: NEGOTIATIONS WITH CONSTRUCTED SPACE, University of Brighton, School of Architecture and Design, Interior Architecture and Urban Studies Programme, Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th of July 2009. The Conference: An abiding concern for designers of interior space is the way that buildings and places are used or occupied. Issues of inhabitation, enclosure and containment are of critical importance in this new century and an understanding of relationships between politics, place and space is indispensable for any sort of practice today. Researchers, practitioners and students in the fields of interiors, art, architecture and spatial design must be open to alternative readings of territory and a range of spatial practices. This three-day conference will be concerned with the motivations, forces, constraints and drives in design for occupation. Fred Scott states that "The function of buildings in human affairs is more correctly described through patterns or rituals of occupation. Buildings will otherwise resist description in terms of more precise functions; as James Gowan has sometimes commented to me, 'I can eat a sandwich in any size of room'. The intended fit between function and space can be elusive, unfocused, but the image is vivid, which is the reason why the idea of obsolescence is so uncertain with regards to buildings" (Fred Scott, 'On Altering Architecture', Routledge, 2008). Occupation may be benign or may be achieved through the acquisition of territory by force - processes of control of people and places. Occupation may also be a state of mind where daily routines and activity are curtailed, moulded and adapted to a particular environment. Equally, spaces may be composed or formed through processes and layers of inhabitation. The conference theme, OCCUPATION will address the friction and negotiation that exists between built space and Inhabitants. -- Presentations will be divided into four areas in order to open ways of thinking about designing for occupation. 5th Global Conference CREATIVE ENGAGEMENTS - THINKING WITH CHILDREN, Friday 17th July - Sunday 19th July 2009. The fifth meeting of this global research project shall explore the many facets of creative engagement with children. Grounded in an inter-disciplinary perspective and with reference to historical and contemporary representations of childhood, this project will examine the complex issues which surround the notion and practices of creative engagement in the context of pedagogy and the curriculum, and in the face of frequently instrumental institutional imperatives. CODEX AND CODE: AESTHETICS, LANGUAGE AND POLITICS IN AN AGE OF DIGITAL MEDIA (NorLit 2009), Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009 har till syfte att genom nordisk samverkan utveckla litteraturforskningen inom såväl den egna disciplinen som i språk- och kulturvetenskaperna. Den organiseras av Institutionen för litteraturvetenskap och idéhistoria vid Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för kommunikation och kultur vid Södertörns högskola, samt Skolan för datavetenskap och kommunikation vid Kungliga Tekniska högskolan. Temat för sammankomsten är CODEX AND CODE: AESTHETICS, LANGUAGE AND POLITICS IN AN AGE OF DIGITAL MEDIA. Konferensen vill främja ämnesöverskridande utforskning av det litterära i vid mening och riktar sig till såväl litteraturvetare som forskare inom språkvetenskap, estetik, medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap, film, teater, filosofi och närliggande ämnen. RGS-IBG Annual Conference SENSEWALKING: SENSORY WALKING METHODS FOR SOCIAL SCIENTISTS in Manchester, 26-28 August 2009. Convenors: Mags Adams (University of Salford) and Kye Askins (Northumbria University). In recent years there has been a growing interest in the role of non-visual senses in the relationships between people and places, in particular how 'sense of place' involves complex corporeal encounters with our environments - how we 'sense' place in terms of sound, smell, touch, taste (alongside sight) as well as understand it through social constructions and circulated texts (Wylie, 2005; Butler, 2006; Edensor, 2006; Pink, 2007). Researchers from across disciplines have worked with the 'sensory walking' concept, utilising sensewalks, soundwalks, listening walks and smell walks as a means to involve participants in discussion, interview, photo-survey, GIS mapping and sound recording, among other innovations/ adaptations. While a recent ESRC seminar series addressed 'Sensescapes' more broadly there has not been a concerted effort to bring together researchers working with beyond-the-visual senses as method. This session seeks to rectify such a gap and welcomes papers from geographers, sociologists, artists, anthropologists, planners, landscape architects and designers (amongst others), acknowledging the multi-disciplinary nature of much of the work in this area. During the autumn 2009 a course in Systems Analysis will be held at the Division of Transport and Location Analysis at KTH in collaboration with a number of researchers at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment. Systems analysis deals with integration of knowledge from different areas in order to handle complex problems, often focusing on applications requiring actions and decisions. Analytical tools, such as mathematical and statistical models, play a crucial role. For utilising these tools, a good overview of theories and methods is required, and knowledge about their applicability and limitations. Furthermore, combinatory skill and creativity are required in mobilising and integrating knowledge from different subject areas together with an understanding of the problems and the contexts in which the results are to be implemented, as well as an ability to communicate insights and results both in a cross disciplinary sense and to various stakeholders. Examples of different methodological approaches will be presented together with illustrative practical applications related to policy analysis and urban, regional and environmental planning. The course will give an insight in systems analysis by presenting a number of practical studies using different types of systems analysis methods and approaches. The students will also be able to practice some of the presented methods in a seminar and a workshop. The course is directed towards PhD students as well as active researchers. HELIGHETENS BILDER: Teoretisk-praktisk kurs med seminarier och workshopmed Tom Sandqvist samt Helén och Rudy Vigil. Plats: laCultura.cc, Cútar, (Velez-Malaga), Spanien. Datum: 1-10 juli 2009. Ansvarig: Professor Tom Sandqvist. -- Helighetens bilder är en workshop som syftar till att kombinera teori och konstnärlig praktik utifrån “heligheten” som gemensamt tema. Med utgångspunkt i sju föreläsningar/seminarier om helighetens olika både historiska och samtida uttrycksformer kombineras sedan den teoretiska reflektionen med eget konstnärligt arbete samt studiebesök i kyrkor och i Alhambra. Workshopen tar sin utgångspunkt i både en nyligen förd tidningsdebatt om kyrkan och heligheten i det sekulariserade samhället och den amerikanske videokonstnären Bill Viola och dennes gestaltning av de stora existentiella frågorna och söker olika nedslag för hur heligheten uttrycks i såväl konsthistorien som i den svenska samtidskonsten. Workshopen reflekterar också över det judiska bildförbudet och den rysk-ortodoxa ikontraditionen. Vidare behandlas det gyllene snittet hos renässanskonstnären Piero della Franscesca som gestaltad gudomlighet. Workshopen avslutas med en reflektion kring heligheten ur ett explicit genusperspektiv.
