STADENS MÖTESPLATSER - FÖR IMAGE OCH GEMENSKAP

En av stadens viktigaste funktioner är att fungera som mötesplats. Om man börjar tänka i termer av möten framstår snart nog varenda kvadratmeter av en stad som en möjlig mötesplats. För individer och grupper, för både bofasta och besökare, för företagare och företag. -- Vi behandlar stadens mötesplatser och dessas betydelse för den sociala sammanhållningen och för en orts eller en plats attraktivitet och image. Vilka olika typer av mötesplatser finns det i en stad? Hur kan mötesplatser etableras, underhållas, utvecklas och förstärkas med hjälp av samhällsplaneringsinsatser? Learning Lab is offering the RESEARCH SUPERVISION COURSE LH207V in both Swedish and English in the fall 2010: 1. The Swedish version starts September 2, 2010, and 2. The English one October 27, 2010. We still have some places left in both versions. The Research Supervision course is an absolute requirement for a Docent title. , An international architecture conference to be held at Nottingham Trent University, Burton Street, Nottingham, NG1 4BU, United Kingdom. -- Some of the most palpable expressions of ‘Nation’ since the late 18th century have been in Architecture and Design. Modern Europe took shape in the 19th century and much of the contest over appropriate design expression in the era can be seen in the struggles to define 'style' in the name of a nation. In the early 19th century, when Heinrich Hübsch raised the issue of appropriate style, one the central underlying motives was nationalism. Famously, Pugin referred to the Neo-Gothic as ‘…the most English of Styles”. By the early 20th century, Art Nouveau and Art Deco and later the Internationalism of Architecture and Design on both sides of the Atlantic had practically put to bed the issue of segregated nationalism for Western Europe and North America.
 
Following the end of WWII, the general fall of colonialism saw the re-emergence of old nations and the formation of new ones, each with the hunger for a new or renewed nationalism in architecture and design. Since the mid 1980s, with the fall of the Soviet Bloc, we have seen a re-emergent interest of nationalism in Architecture and Design. From South America to Australasia, the Middle East to South Africa, from Asia to the Pacific, Eastern Europe to Sub-continental India, national projects have been proposed, commissioned, and built over struggled effort and sometimes over blood.
 
In contrast to the emergence of nationalism in the late 20th century, the thrust of technology has sustained not only the inter-nationalism of the early 20th century but has also engendered a resolute transnational outlook in Architecture and Design. What role should the notion of 'Nation' play in Architecture and Design? This conference explores the continuing connections between Architecture, Design and the Nation. Keynote Speakers:

CALL FOR PAPERS: INTERACTION OF COLOUR & LIGHT IN THE ARTS AND SCIENCES AIC 2011 Midterm Meeting of the International Colour Association (AIC) 7–10 June 2011, Zurich University of the Arts, Zurich, Switzerland -- Submit an extended abstract in English in order to participate with an oral paper or a poster presentation in the AIC 2011 Midterm Meeting. The length of the abstract should not be less than 500 nor more than 2000 words following the submission template and guidelines provided at the website www.aic2011.org. Any accepted author is required to participate in the AIC 2011 Midterm Meeting and pay the early registration fee as a full delegate. If multiple, same-single-author abstracts are submitted and accepted, only one will be scheduled for oral or poster presentation. Multiple contributions as a co-author are only possible if another co-author registers, presents the paper and participates in the AIC 2011 conference. Using terms and concepts such as appearance, interaction, performance, event, and by privileging the materiality, mediality and the interactive dimension of colour & light, the conference presentations should demonstrate how productive the theme of the INTERACTION OF COLOUR & LIGHT IN THE ARTS AND SCIENCES is. The fields of inquiry include: education, design, art, media, lighting, architecture, theatre, dance, as well as psychology, colour science and technology. The AIC 2011 Midterm Meeting aims to further discussion and nurture the latest findings in these various fields.

Conference SCALE, Friday 19 November – Saturday 20 November 2010, University of Kent, Canterbury. SCALE is a word which underlies much of architectural and urban design practice, its history and theory, and its technology. Its connotations have traditionally been linked with the humanities, in the sense of relating to human societies and to human form. To build in scale goes virtually without saying in the world of ‘polite’ architecture, but this is a precept observed more often in the breach when it comes to vast swathes of commercial and institutional design. The older, more particular, meaning in the humanities, pertaining to classical western culture, is where the sense of scale often resides in cultural production. Scale may be traced back, ultimately, to the discovery of musical harmonies, or it may reside in the arithmetic proportional relationship of the building to its parts. One might question the continued relevance of this understanding of scale in the global world of today. What, in other words, is culturally specific about scale? And what does scale mean in a world where an intuitive, visual understanding is often undermined or superseded by other senses, or by hyper-reality? – More information: <scale@kent.ac.uk >

FORSKNINGSRÅDET FÖR ARBETSLIV OCH SOCIALVETENSKAP, FAS: Ny utlysning av programstöd inom området FUNKTIONSHINDER. Syftet med programstöden är att i ett längre perspektiv förstärka och bygga ut forskarmiljöer. Det är en form av basstöd som skall göra det möjligt för grupper av forskare att ta upp nya frågeställningar och bearbeta dem under en längre tid. Programstöd kommer endast att ges till etablerade forskargrupperingar. Stödet är inte avsett för enskilda forskare. Eftersom ett syfte med programstöden är att stärka forskningsområdet på sikt, är det positivt om yngre forskare ingår. De sökande måste ha en bärande programidé och visa förtrogenhet med litteratur och teorier inom området samt kunna visa en god metodologisk kompetens. Nära kontakter med framstående forskare, inom och utom landet, är värdefullt. Ansökningarna bedöms i första hand utifrån vetenskaplig kvalitet. Internationell expertis anlitas vid bedömningarna. –Forskning om funktionshinder kan gälla faktorer och processer som gör funktionsnedsättningen till handikapp och hur dessa faktorer och processer kan förändras. Även forskning som syftar till bättre förståelse för funktionsnedsättningen och betydelsen av olika kompensatoriska insatser är av intresse. Forskning om funktionshinder är ofta tvär- och/eller mångvetenskaplig och kan gälla olika områden i samhälle och arbetsliv, olika grupper i samhället och skilda faser i livet. Forskning inom samhällsvetenskapliga ämnesområden och folkhälsovetenskap kan ge ökad förståelse för sociala, ekonomiska och kulturella faktorers betydelse likaväl som fysiska och psykiska aspekter för personer med funktionsnedsättning. -- Ansökan görs via FAS webbtjänst för forskare, eKlara, http://eklara.fas.se.
