Abstract: Vem eller vilka definierar rummet? På vilket sätt definieras det? Vad är rummets roll i detta? Och framför allt – vilket rum är det som avses? Den byggda miljön uppfattas ofta som neutral och vanlig men de rumsliga sammanhangen rymmer både diskursiva ställningstaganden och en materiell dynamik. Frågor om ursprung och syfte samt hur föreställningar formas uppmanar till att undersöka på vilka grunder ett rum, en byggnad, en lokalisering eller en stadsplan slås fast som bättre än någon annan. Varför just här och just så? Studien handlar om de rumsliga aspekterna på decentraliseringen av den psykiatriska vården i Sverige 1958–1999. I centrum för studien står Nackaprojektet 1974–1980, ett av de första försöken med decentraliserad psykiatri i Sverige och kanske det mest kända. Vilka diskurser om normalisering av livet för människor med psykiska funktionshinder låg bakom denna nya organisering av vården? Vilka idéer om var vården skulle bedrivas fanns och vilka rumsliga sammanhang ledde det till? Diskurs, materialitet och praktik ses som sammanvävda rumsliga aspekter som uppträder i olika konfigurationer och skala. I avhandlingen betonas vikten av ett heterogent rumsperspektiv.

Bojan Boric (lecturer and Ph D student, KTH-A) presents his conference paper for Cities vs. Global Challenges (Belgrade) URBAN TRANSFORM-ABILITIES: CHISINAU, MOLDOVA – SELF-REGULATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INSTITUTIONALIZED PLANNING PROCESSES. With the City of Chisinau in former Soviet Union as a starting point, the paper discusses processes of self-regulated urban transformations in relation to the inherited urban planning models dating from the Russian colonial era as well as the Soviet planning system. The research is based on site studies, official planning and legal documents, transcripts, findings from related field of research etc. Discussant: Jennifer Mack. Oliver Thill föreläser om ett urval av kontorets projekt i relation till de förändringar som skett på den europeiska marknaden under det senaste decenniet och om den ökande konflikten mellan den europeiska arkitekturtraditionen av klassicism / rationalism och pressen från en alltmer minskande budget för arkitekturprojekt i Europa. An afternoon for researchers who share an interest in discussing how creative and academic practices in art and design relate to overall scientific practices at KTH. CALL FOR PAPERS: Symposium and annual meeting in the Nordic Association of Architectural Research will take place at the School of Landscape Architecture in Alnarp, 25–27 April 2012. Alnarp is situated close to Malmö in southern Sweden. The symposium addresses the following four design disciplines: Interior design, Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. The Wallenberg Foundation Postdoctorial Scholarship Program
The Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation have set up a Scholarship Program at Stanford University. The purpose of the program is to bring outstanding young Swedish scientists to Stanford University for one to two years of postdoctoral study and research in one of the many areas of research related to environmental and energy sustainability. The application period starts January, 2012, and a complete application shall be submitted to the Foundation no later than April 30, 2012. Call for abstracts: ARCHITECTURE AS HUMAN INTERFACE, the 4th Symposium of Architecture Research in Finland, the 4th International Conference in Architectural Competitions 26–27.10.2012. This scientific conference in Helsinki is a joint venture between researches in Finland and Sweden. The conference themes is developed in cooperation between the 4th Architectural Research Symposium in Finland and the 4th International conference on architectural Competitions. Venue: The Department of Architecture Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Espoo, Finland. ”Interface” is a word that is traditionally used in the context of information and communication technology; it is the meeting point between the human being and the machine or program, through which we will be able to operate the machine, and also receive the experience it provides. As technology is about to take the next step and turn ubiquitous, the problems and prospects of computer interfaces will become relevant to the whole built environment. However, architecture has always had its human interface: building facades have communicated their function, their social prestige, their history, and their aesthetics. Doors and windows have been used much before Microsoft revolutionized personal computer interfaces with its Mac-inspired Windows® user interface. But how much do we actually know about the way that people use the built environment, how they interpret the messages that architects send them, and how far their basic needs and feelings are touched by this human interface? Architects have developed ways of ensuring architectural and urban quality, such as architectural competitions, but should be now turn a critical eye on these institutions and traditions? As the ethos of co-design, collaborative planning, and user oriented living environment dominates our current discussion, what kind of ideas of humanity and human agency are embedded in our thinking? The organizers invite papers on all fields of architectural research. The symposium will address, but not exclusively, the following themes: Competing in Architecture; Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture; Research and Design – Bridging the Gap; Human Oriented Living Environment; The Future of the Past; and Sustainability and Creativity. DYNAMICS OF INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN HERITAGE PROCESSES (PhD course, 5 hec). This doctoral/ hird cycle course is open to doctoral students within the broad field of heritage studies and will be held in conjunction with an international conference hosted by University of Gothenburg, Inaugural Conference for the Association of Critical Heritage Studies, Gothenburg, June 5-8, 2012. The main core of the course will be a session during this conference, in which doctoral students present papers. These papers, based on the students’ own research projects, will focus on the theme of the course and relate to the course literature. Thematically, the course draws attention to the fact that when something is included in the category of "heritage", other phenomena are simultaneously excluded. Focusing on the dynamics which underpin such processes of categorization and selection, the session asks how inclusion and exclusion is played out and can be theorized. The session welcomes papers from doctoral students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds relating to fields such as cultural studies, heritage studies, museum studies, tourism studies (and many more). Papers should focus on how heritage processes come to include and/or exclude different conceptions of the past (voices, experiences, interpretations, narratives), actors (individuals, groups, communities, nations) and materialities (objects, buildings, landscapes, localities). Contributions can be theoretical and/or empirical. A point of departure for the session is that heritage can be seen as negotiated and unstable processes involving a series of interfaces between perspectives, levels, actors and materialities. At each interface, competing meanings, interests, forms of knowledge and truth claims are negotiated and relations of power and differentiated access to resources – economic, political, cultural – come into play. Course organisation: The course (5 higher education credits), will be open to maximum 20 (minimum 5) PhD students, and will be given in English. It has two main objectives: firstly, to develop and deepen a discussion within the theme outlined above, and secondly, to provide an opportunity for participants to practice the procedures of research conferences, and to reflect upon the learning opportunities and outcomes, specific to the scientific conference format. The course will be financed by "Tema kulturvård" at the Faculty of Science, University of Gothenburg. Conference fee, accommodation and meals will be provided for. ATELJÉSTIPENDIUM FÖR NYEXAMINERADE
Bild- och formkonstnärer som examinerats 2011 eller 2012 från en konstnärlig högskola kan ansöka om en sex månader lång ateljévistelse. Ett stipendium på 90 000 kronor ingår.

Svenska institutet (SI) är Sveriges expertmyndighet på samarbeten i Östersjöregionen. Verksamheten syftar till att bidra till utveckling av långsiktiga relationer mellan aktörer i Sverige och programmets samarbetsländer (Estland, Georgien, Lettland, Litauen, Moldavien, Polen, Ryssland, Ukraina och Vitryssland). Just nu pågår Svenska institutets utlysning för individuella långtidsstipendier för året 2012/2013. Stipendierna vänder sig till svenskar som vill förlägga en vistelse till något av samarbetsländerna för en period mellan som lägst en månad och högst upp till ett år. Sista ansökningsdag infaller den 1 april 2012.
