Titel: RESEARCH WHEN WE WANT TO IMPROVE REALITY - ACTION RESEARCH AND HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION
Abstract: Are you a ”lazy” researcher that aims towards small increments in the body of knowledge, and focus on things that are easy to get accepted for publication, such as minor experiments or a survey study? Do you think it is thrilling when your research case develops towards a disaster, so that it will become a juicy case for a paper? Or, are your objectives more to provide advice to the case owners and avoid a potential catastrophe? These provocative questions are put to make you reflect on why we do research, and whether or not the purpose of research is to make itself useful or only to produce knowledge. If you aim for improving the practice and acknowledge that you have a stake in the research results, you need to make this a part of your research methodology. -- This talk aims at discussing our experiences of applying, understanding and developing the action research methodology to fit our needs of doing research in close cooperation with several public authorities. We will critically examine how the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) has failed to acknowledge change-driven action research in favour of things such as design cases, experiments or gadget development. We will provide our view of what action research is, its historical roots and different flavours of it and what the potential in it for HCI could be. Finally, we will share success cases and horror stories from several long-time cooperation projects with public authorities.

På seminariet kommer vi att diskutera Lizettes text i ARV. Transatlantic Place Making: The Use of a Swedish Bridal Crown as Heritage Performance in the United States. Artikeln är utgångspunkten för ett kapitel i en monografi på svenska som handlar om gåvosamlingens biografi. Det empiriska materialet består av en samling som skapats i Sverige för export till ett museum i USA. Lizettes undersökning kretsar kring frågan om på vilka grunder en sådan samling komponeras, hur den tas emot, vad som sker när den förs in en museiorganisation - vilka sociala liv får föremålen och med vilka konsekvenser tas de i bruk. Så Lizettes önskemål är att ni läser texten kritiskt och hjälper henne att komma vidare i arbetet. Synpunkter om konsthantverkets roll i efterkrigstidens Sverige och USA tas gärna emot. I PRAKTIKEN: MARTINO GAMPER
Föreläsning med formgivaren och möbelskaparen Martino Gamper

Martino Gamper är en italiensk formgivare och möbelskapare, baserad i London. Han studerade i Wien, först skulptur på Akademie der bildenden Künste och sedan produktdesign på Universität für angewandte Kunst. Efter studierna återvände han till Italien där han frilansade och arbetade för designbyråer som Studio Matteo Thun. 1997 flyttade han till London och började studera på Royal College of Art. Efter examen har han drivit sin egen studio och fått mycket uppmärksamhet för projekt som 100 Chairs in 100 Days (2007), Gio Ponti translated by Martino Gamper (2007), och hans Trattoria-projekt: Trattoria al Cappello (2007 - pågående) och Total Trattoria (2008). Martino undersöker de sociala och fysiska aspekterna av möbler, föremål och rum. Vanligtvis återanvänder och förvandlar han dessa för att skapa nya sammanhang och föreslå nya synsätt och användningsområden. Med bakgrund i konst och design rör han sig fritt mellan dessa områden och hans arbeten antyder en intressant dialog mellan dessa fält. Martino har genom åren genomfört många samarbeten: till exempel med Rainer Spehl i Furniture While You Wait (2001), We Make Remake (2002) och Rainer and Martino's world cup, med Alex Rich och Åbäkes Maki Suzuki och Kajsa Ståhl i Trattoria-projekten. Under 2009 har Martino varit inbjuden till Iaspis ateljéprogram - i ett test av nya former för internationella arbetsvistelser inom ramarna för Iaspis verksamhet på formområdet. Martino Gampers arbetsvistelse har organiserats i samarbete med konst- och designgruppen Uglycute i Stockholm.

Description: The building is located in Borås and is a renovation of an old industrial building with an integrated new expansion. The shopping mall contains areas designated for shops, as well as recreation common areas, for events and restaurants, all distributed on two floors in the new building and three in the old one. The two top floors in the new construction are planned for parking facilities and the top floor of the old building houses office spaces. The complex also includes a third building, with more parking spaces. -- The task: You will work in groups of five persons and all students should be able to test all the skills required for the task, from modeling to rendering, to planning. The overall concept will be treated as a system, part of which certain areas must be handled in detail: North Entrance, East Circulation, Atrium and two shops (one in the new and one in the old building). 2010 AESOP PhD Workshop on Seili Island in Finland: SPATIAL JUSTICE - HOW TO PLAN AND DISTRIBUTE THE LUXURY OF SPACE? The AESOP PhD Workshop in Finland 3rd - 5th of July 2010 offers PhD students an intensive course to support the development of their PhD studies. The workshop will bring young European and other international researchers in the planning field together to exchange ideas and knowledge. The workshop will be a mixture of small intensive working groups and supporting plenary sessions with keynote lectures from the mentors. It requires an active participation and presentation of research issues, theories and methodology to discuss. IMAGINING: The 27th Annual SAHANZ Conference, the University of Newcastle, 30thJune-2nd July 2010 In C. Wright Mills 1959 work The Sociological Imagination, Mills argues that historical events are linked, through the “imagination”, with the intimate and personal experience of everyday life. Torn between the global and the personal, architecture can be positioned at the same crossroads, where imagination fuels the human experience of an architectural object, memory or event. The imagination also opens up alternative, implausible and disparate trajectories through which the built environment can be inhabited and understood. This conference explores the role of the imagination in architecture and architectural history. How are broad narratives distilled through subjective recollection? How does factual history intersect with fiction and the imaginary? How is personal experience embedded in historical narratives or architectural fantasy? How would we describe an “architectural imagination” in the context of C. Wright Mills? How does the act of imagining entwine with the work of history and the historian? We invite architectural historians to reflect upon the theme of imagining in all of its possible contexts. We welcome papers on a broad range of subjects that engage notions of the imagination in architectural history. The conference hopes to explore the buried traces of imagination, which shape our architectural histories of the past and present. SPACES OF HISTORY / HISTORIES OF SPACE: Emerging Approaches to the Study of the Built Environment. A Conference at the University of California at Berkeley on April 30, 2010. In the past three decades, a growing number of scholars in the humanities and social sciences have turned their attention to space and to the built environment as a means of understanding historical processes. The writings of Lefebvre, Foucault, Gregory, Harvey, Soja, Latour and others have significantly reshaped the intellectual landscape across academic fields. Meanwhile, the subject matter and research methods of the history of architecture, landscapes and planning have become increasingly open to reassessment. Looking to survey and assess new approaches and analytical tools for studying the history of built spaces across a variety of scales and geographies, this conference will explore a range of questions pertaining to theory, methodology and pedagogy. How has the "spatial turn" in the humanities and social sciences transformed the ways in which history of the built environment is theorized and researched? How should we study a historical moment when certain types of evidence predominate? What are the potentials and biases in the use of particular research techniques and narrative forms? To what extent are these choices shaped by disciplinary knowledge? How might such interrogations help us conceive new pedagogies for design and planning? The conference is expected to attract a diverse group of scholars interested in interdisciplinary research on the history of the built environment. Participation from graduate students and early career academics is especially welcome. Participants will present papers related to one of the following two tracks: 1. Interrogating Theories and Methodologies: Papers in this track will explore how built spaces have been integrated into historical research in a variety of disciplines, or discuss the use of particular theoretical formulations that have become influential in studying the history of the built environment. We are especially interested in work that assesses the potentials and limits of research methods, such as ethnography and oral history, as well as the use of various types of archival evidence; 2. History as Pedagogy: Teaching and Practice: Papers in this track will examine pedagogical approaches to history in design education and their implications for the making of the built environment, including professional practice. Topics of interest include the use of history as precedent, the construction of a survey course, the relationship between history teaching and the design studio, and other interdisciplinary approaches to historical research such as experimental art practice and other creative mediums. As part of the activities of this conference, we will be holding a special poster exhibition that explores the relationship between historical thinking and the making of the built environment. This exhibition especially welcomes the participation of graduate students in professional programs as well as advanced undergraduate students. CEPHAD 2010 Conference, Danish Design School in Copenhagen, January 27-29, 2010. The borderland between philosophy and design research: Centre for Philosophy and Design (CEPHAD) solicits contributions to the CEPHAD 2010 conference, to be held at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen January 27-29, 2010. A pre-conference master class for Ph.D. students will be conducted by leading researchers, January 26-27. The purpose of the conference is to stimulate the flow of ideas between research in philosophy and research in design. At an operational level, the conference aims at creating personal and institutional contacts of lasting value for research cooperation across national and discipline borders. The expected audience includes researchers in design, philosophy or other relevant disciplines, whose work may benefit from or contribute to cross-fertilization between philosophy and design research. THE UTOPIA OF TRADITION, IASTE 2010, International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments, American University of Beirut, 15-18 December 2010. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: In recent years IASTE scholars have examined traditions and their multitude of built forms in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. To advance this effort, this conference seeks to study how tradition inspires and informs changing concepts of utopia in theory and space. Utopian theories and plans emerge from a complex symbiotic relationship with traditions that are based on notions of the ideal.Indeed, utopias cannot be understood without understanding the traditions from which they develop. At its etymological root, utopia embodies both the theoretical paradox of an ideal place, eu-topia, and a non-place, ou-topia, rendering it an impossibility. As an ideal place, utopia relies on tradition, but as a non-place it attempts to negate it. Although most utopias have spatial manifestations, they often attempt to harness and make static the traditions used to create these spaces. The geographies of utopia physically ground tradition, but tradition simultaneously controls these very same geographies. This contemporary moment of economic crisis necessitates a re-examination of this dynamic. The word utopiais no longer as commonly referenced in professional practice as it was a few decades ago. However, architects, planners, and politicians continue to look for and disseminate notions of ideal forms. Regulated by ethnicity, religion, or race, the identity enclaves of many modern nations use territory to perpetuate visions of perfect communities based on specific traditions. The continuation and strengthening of tradition, cloaked in the language of utopia, may thus be seen to provide the focus for new gated communities in the developing world, the dreamscapes in cities around the Persian Gulf and the Pacific Rim, and the faux-colonial homes in American suburbs. On the other hand, there is an emerging discourse that reconceptualizes utopia itself, not as a product but as an open process aimed at transforming, rather than transcending, the existing condition. -- This IASTE conference will focus on the theme of utopia and tradition in the twenty-first century. The conference will attract an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners from around the world working in the disciplines of anthropology, architecture, art and architectural history, city and regional planning, cultural studies, geography, history, landscape studies, sociology, and urban studies. They will present papers related to the following three themes: Track 1. Utopian Ideals versus Traditional Physical Realities; Track 2. The Practices of Utopia and the Politics of Tradition; and Track 3. TRAVELLERS CLUBS JUBILEUMSSTIPENDIUM: Vid årsmötet 2007 beslöts att klubben skall dela ut ett stipendium åren 2008 till 2011 i samband med klubbens årshögtid i februari. Stipendiesumman är 20 000 kr för åren 2008-2010 och ökas till 50 000 kr år 2011 vid klubbens 100 års jubileum. 2009 års Jubileumsstipendium tilldelades Mattias Hagman för resa till Australien för att leta efter de bakterier som skyddar hotade grodarter. Stipendiet skall vara ett resestipendium för den som på ett ”travlarmässigt” sätt bedriver forskning, gör upptäcktsresor eller motsvarande i klubbens anda. Det skall vara ett stöd i denna verksamhet och inte vara en belöning för tidigare prestationer. Stipendiaten förväntas senare hålla ett föredrag för klubben. För att bidrag från samfundet kan bli aktuellt ska projektet uppfylla följande: Ämnet ska vara angeläget och kunskap saknas eller behöver kompletteras, projektet kan inte komma till stånd utan bistånd från samfundet och resultatet ska komma många till del. Projekt som samfundet stöder kan tex vara arkeologiska utgrävningar, dokumentations- och restaureringsinsatser, forskningsprojekt, publikationer, seminarier, utställningar, inköp av föremål. Därutöver kan bidrag ges till projekt kom i vidare mening rör företeelser och aktiviteter specifika för Stockholm. Bidrag kan sökas av såväl enskilda, som grupper av personer och institutioner. Bidrag delas i första hand ut för att bestrida kostnader för material och teknisk produktion. Bidrag delas även ut i form av stipendier. Riksbyggens Jubileumsfond DEN GODA STADEN delar ut stipendier för att stödja forskning, utveckling och utbildning för bättre bomiljö inom områden som arkitektur, byggnadsteknik, fastighetsförvaltning, energiförsörjning, miljövård, samhälls- och trafikplanering. Från 1991 till 2009 har fonden delat ut 109 stipendier till ett värde av ca 6,8 miljoner kronor. Riksbyggen utlyser nu 2010 års stipendier. Fonden kommer 2010 att dela ut 600 000 kronor fördelat på minst 4 stipendier. Fonden bedömer ansökningarna med hänsyn till kvalitet och hur det i ansökan beskrivna projektets resultat har förutsättningar att bli en viktig del i att skapa bättre bomiljöer. Projekten som fonden stödjer skall ha direkt anknytning till bostads- och stadsmiljöfrågor. Fonden stödjer i första hand projekt där fonden är huvudfinansiär eller där projektet utgör en urskiljbar del i ett större sammanhang. -- Den 2 mars 2010 är sista dagen för ansökan om stipendier. FOOTPRINT, Delft School of Design Journal, call for papers: DIGITALLY DRIVEN ARCHITECTURE. Similar to the way that industrial fabrication with its concepts of standardization and serial production has influenced modernist architecture, digital fabrication influences contemporary architecture: While standardization focused on processes of rationalization of form, mass-customization as a new paradigm that replaces mass production, addresses non-standard, complex designs based on non-Euclidean geometries. Furthermore, knowledge about the designed object can be incorporated at the level of its connectivity with data stemming not only from its geometry but also from its content and behaviour within an environment. Digitally driven architecture implies, therefore, on the one hand, digitally designed and fabricated architecture, and on the other hand, it implies architecture controlled and actuated by digital means. In this context, the 6th Footprint-issue is examining the influence of digital means on architecture as pragmatic and conceptual instruments for exploring and generating complex systems of spatial organization as well as for constructing and actuating architecture. The focus is not only on computer-based generative systems for the development of architectural designs, but also on architecture incorporating aspects of digital sensing/actuating mechanisms that enable buildings to interact with their users and surroundings. The 6th Footprint-issue will be published in April 2010. Authors interested in submitting a contribution are requested to submit full papers of maximum 6000 words to the editors before 10th of January 2010. CALL FOR PAPERS: We are seeking papers for a peer-reviewed book on color and design to be published by Berg. Working title: COLOR AND DESIGN. Edited by Marilyn DeLong and Barbara Martinson. Cognition, context and culture are all vital to the way we experience color. From the products we use, the clothes that we wear, and the spaces we inhabit, color provides both visual appeal and information. Our proposed book, Color and Design, addresses how we experience color through specific examples of how color is used in the design disciplines. While other books devoted to color contain basic information regarding color theory and color use, this book intends to foster a greater understanding of color through the in-depth analysis of specific cases. These examples will explore color as a cultural phenomenon, a pragmatic device for communication, and as a valuable marketing tool. Based in the disciplines of clothing design, graphic design, interior design, and product design, this book will be a valuable resource for both design practitioners and scholars. -- Paper Length: We are looking for both longer papers (6,000-8,000 words) and shorter ”snapshot” length papers (2000 words). Timeline and Review Process: February 2010: Submit your idea for a paper to the editors (include either a short bio or abbreviated vitae). Editors will then request an abstract. April 2010: Abstracts sent to editors. August 2010: Full papers due. Final manuscripts will be reviewed by editors and contributors. Fall 2011: Revision and book publication.
