Neil Thomas is a Structural Engineer and Director and founder of Atelier One Engineers, London whose work includes contributions to the design of Federation Square, Melbourne, Baltic Flour MIlls, Newcastle and the new Singapore Arts Centre as well as collaborations with artists including Rachel Whiteread, Anthony Gormley and Amish Kapoor. Particularly the firms work aims to test the boundaries of structural engineering as a discipline both in terms of collaboration and in terms of design. He is co-author, with Aran Chadwick of Atelier One: Liquid Thresholds and has taught widely in Schools of Architecture, including the Architectural Assocation, London and University of Yale.
Mario Carpo is an Architectural Historian. His research and publications focus on the relationship between architectural theory, cultural history, and the history of media and information technology. Particularly his work draws out resonances between the histories of early modern architectural design and contemporary design discourse. His publications include Architecture in the Age of Printing 2001, Leon Battista Alberti's Delineation of the City of Rome, 2007, co-authored; Perspective, Projections and Design, 2007, edited. Mario has taught and researched widely within Schools of Architecture and research institutions worldwide including the Canadian Centre for Architecture, of which he was director from 2002-2005, the Getty Research Institute, and the American Academy in Rome.

Institution Building presents a study by Frankfurt-based architect Nikolaus Hirsch that conceptualizes and tests new models for contemporary art institutions. Based on the work for the European Kunsthalle the approach attempts to constructively question concepts of “stability” and “instability” and - in doing so - proposes a strategy for a new institutional typology. Nikolaus Hirsch will give a lecture about this project and talk to Nina Möntmann, professor of art theory at the Royal Collage of Art, Stockholm. The work of Nikolaus Hirsch focuses on institutional models of artistic practice and includes projects such as the European Kunsthalle, unitednationsplaza in Berlin (with Anton Vidokle), the Bockenheimer Depot Theater in Frankfurt (with William Forsythe) and recently the Cybermohalla Hub in Delh. His work also includes the award-winning Dresden Synagogue. Nikolaus Hirsch is currently a professor at Städelschule in Frankfurt and has recently curated ErsatzStadt: Representations of the Urban at Volksbühne Berlin and is a member of the Curating Architecture Program at Goldsmiths College in London. Hirsch is the author of On Boundaries (2007) and co-author of Track 17 and Institution Building (Sternberg Press). The AESOP PhD Workshop in Finland 3rd - 5th of July 2010 offers PhD students an intensive course to support the development of their PhD studies. The workshop will bring young European and other international researchers in the planning field together to exchange ideas and knowledge. The workshop will be a mixture of small intensive working groups and supporting plenary sessions with keynote lectures from the mentors. It requires an active participation and presentation of research issues, theories and methodology to discuss. Under våren 2010 organiseras för 11:e terminen i rad seminarieserien KOMMUNIKATION: KULTUR, TEKNOLOGI, VETENSKAP på Skolan för datavetenskap och kommunikation vid KTH. Temat för våren 2010 är HÅLLBARHETER där vi skapar möten och undersöker förutsättningar för kritiska dialoger mellan humanistisk-samhällsvetenskaplig och teknisk-ekonomisk forskning om hållbarheter. Vårens seminarieserie är ett samarrangemang med Centre for Sustainable Communications (http://www.sustainablecommunications.org/). Med nya miljö- och klimatkatastroflarm varje vecka och varje månad är allt fler överens om att en ”omställning till ett hållbart samhälle" måste ske för att bryta den nuvarande utvecklingen. Denna medvetenhet om förändringarnas nödvändighet återfinns idag i ökande grad hos såväl privatpersoner som hos politiker, institutioner och företag. När vi tar steget från ord till handling visar det sig dock att bilderna av framtiden går isär och att vi pratar om flera, delvis uteslutande hållbarheter. Vanligen diskuteras hållbarheter ur politiska, tekniska och ekonomiska perspektiv emedan frågor om livsstil, livstempo, konsumtion och kultur ofta hamnar i skymundan. Vilka är de sociala och kulturella aspekterna av hållbarheter? I vårens seminarieserie vill vi öka kunskapen och framförallt den kritiska medvetenheten om de sociala och kulturella aspekterna av ”omställningen” genom att fokusera på fyra övergripande områden: hållbarheter; medieteknologier; långsamheter; och framtidsbilder. -- DOKTORANDKURS: I samband med seminarieserien kommer även en doktorandkurs att anordnas. Doktorandkursens huvudsakliga innehåll kommer att bestå av aktivt deltagande i seminarieserien (ovan). Utöver detta kommer en del aktiviteter att anordnas och en del texter att avhandlas tillsammans. CEPHAD 2010 Conference, Danish Design School in Copenhagen, January 27-29, 2010. The borderland between philosophy and design research: Centre for Philosophy and Design (CEPHAD) solicits contributions to the CEPHAD 2010 conference, to be held at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen January 27-29, 2010. A pre-conference master class for Ph.D. students will be conducted by leading researchers, January 26-27. The purpose of the conference is to stimulate the flow of ideas between research in philosophy and research in design. At an operational level, the conference aims at creating personal and institutional contacts of lasting value for research cooperation across national and discipline borders. The expected audience includes researchers in design, philosophy or other relevant disciplines, whose work may benefit from or contribute to cross-fertilization between philosophy and design research. THE UTOPIA OF TRADITION, IASTE 2010, International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments, American University of Beirut, 15-18 December 2010. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: In recent years IASTE scholars have examined traditions and their multitude of built forms in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. To advance this effort, this conference seeks to study how tradition inspires and informs changing concepts of utopia in theory and space. Utopian theories and plans emerge from a complex symbiotic relationship with traditions that are based on notions of the ideal.Indeed, utopias cannot be understood without understanding the traditions from which they develop. At its etymological root, utopia embodies both the theoretical paradox of an ideal place, eu-topia, and a non-place, ou-topia, rendering it an impossibility. As an ideal place, utopia relies on tradition, but as a non-place it attempts to negate it. Although most utopias have spatial manifestations, they often attempt to harness and make static the traditions used to create these spaces. The geographies of utopia physically ground tradition, but tradition simultaneously controls these very same geographies. This contemporary moment of economic crisis necessitates a re-examination of this dynamic. The word utopiais no longer as commonly referenced in professional practice as it was a few decades ago. However, architects, planners, and politicians continue to look for and disseminate notions of ideal forms. Regulated by ethnicity, religion, or race, the identity enclaves of many modern nations use territory to perpetuate visions of perfect communities based on specific traditions. The continuation and strengthening of tradition, cloaked in the language of utopia, may thus be seen to provide the focus for new gated communities in the developing world, the dreamscapes in cities around the Persian Gulf and the Pacific Rim, and the faux-colonial homes in American suburbs. On the other hand, there is an emerging discourse that reconceptualizes utopia itself, not as a product but as an open process aimed at transforming, rather than transcending, the existing condition. -- This IASTE conference will focus on the theme of utopia and tradition in the twenty-first century. The conference will attract an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners from around the world working in the disciplines of anthropology, architecture, art and architectural history, city and regional planning, cultural studies, geography, history, landscape studies, sociology, and urban studies. They will present papers related to the following three themes: Track 1. Utopian Ideals versus Traditional Physical Realities; Track 2. The Practices of Utopia and the Politics of Tradition; and Track 3. In landscape architecture and urbanism, architecture and heritage studies the concept site is gaining increasing attention. What is found on the site, the uses and the interpretations of it have become determining aspects for the theoretical investigation as well as the design, preservation and transformation of the post-industrial urban landscape. The notion As Found contains a verb and hence opens up the possibility for addressing the situatedness of reading and operating within sites. As a design approach As Found stresses the qualities of what is already there as a positive starting point for interaction between past, present and future states, between the act of preserving and that of transforming. AS FOUND is the optic through which the conference in Copenhagen, 17th and 18th June 2010 will revisit and reflect upon the everyday urban landscape. Scholars and practitioners within landscape architecture, architecture, urbanism, cultural- and heritage studies are invited to submit abstracts related to the arching theme - AS FOUND - and the following three tracks: theory (1), practice (2), and politics (3). CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ENVIRONMENTS (CYE) CENTER FOR RESEARCH AND DESIGN invite applications to the Ph.D. Program in Design and Planning in the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado for research on some aspect of children or youth and the built or natural environment. Applicants should have a strong interest in the physical environment as a context for behavior, development and intervention. A degree in planning, design or allied discipline is preferred but not required. Contingent on approval, the program will provide funding, including tuition, to a qualified applicant, who will be expected to work 20 hours per week as a Research Assistant or a Teaching Assistant. Support will continue in subsequent years, pending satisfactory progress through the program. The successful applicant will be affiliated with and work in the College's Children, Youth and Environments (CYE) Center for Research and Design. The CYE Center includes faculty from planning, the design professions and cognate areas, as well as about one dozen PhD students from various backgrounds. Call for Papers SEXUATE SUBJECTS: POLITICS, POETICS AND ETHICS, Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th December 2010, UCL, London. This international interdisciplinary event will examine how political, poetic and ethical practice and thought engage with questions of sexuality and sexual difference on a global stage. At a time when women’s and minority group rights are still frequently under-represented and marginalised in mainstream global discussions of citizenship and democracy, culture, health and community life, Sexuate Subjects responds to French thinker, Luce Irigaray’s theory of ”sexuate difference” for enabling critically-aware global formations of self-identity and community, art, architectural and spatial practices, ecology, environmental care and sustainability, health and bio-medically assisted life. In particular, Sexuate Subjects will focus on these different relationships as they are expressed in political, poetic and ethical practice and thought in disciplines including: architecture, art, literature, modern languages, philosophy, the political and social sciences. By examining these complex expressions of our physical and psychic lives through artefact, body, dialogue, image, installation and word, this event will provide a platform of diverse approaches which can help us build sexuate futures. Such approaches will contribute towards developing more nuanced understandings of the diversity of global cultures and their academic and public intersections. International experts from higher education, professional and public realms, as well as young researchers and practitioners, are invited to respond. Stiftelsens ändamål är att stödja vetenskaplig forskning och forskarutbildning inom arkitektur, byggnadsteknik, stadsplanering, boende och fastighetsförvaltning. Inom boende och fastighetsförvaltning är ett viktigt område villkoren för fastighetsägande och förvaltning med hänsyn till skatteregler, statliga och kommunala normer och lagstiftning. Stiftelsens ändamål skall i första hand främjas genom personliga stipendier till unga forskarstuderande verksamma vid tekniska högskolor och universitet i Sverige. SAMFUNDET S:T ERIKs anslag och stipendier delas ut till projekt rörande Stockholm. För att bidrag från samfundet kan bli aktuellt ska projektet uppfylla följande: Ämnet ska vara angeläget och kunskap saknas eller behöver kompletteras, projektet kan inte komma till stånd utan bistånd från samfundet och resultatet ska komma många till del. Projekt som samfundet stöder kan tex vara arkeologiska utgrävningar, dokumentations- och restaureringsinsatser, forskningsprojekt, publikationer, seminarier, utställningar, inköp av föremål. Därutöver kan bidrag ges till projekt kom i vidare mening rör företeelser och aktiviteter specifika för Stockholm. Bidrag kan sökas av såväl enskilda, som grupper av personer och institutioner. Bidrag delas i första hand ut för att bestrida kostnader för material och teknisk produktion. Bidrag delas även ut i form av stipendier. Samfundet kommer att kontakta Dig/Er per brev vid bifall eller avslag. Vid bifall behåller vi Dina/Era ansökningshandlingar i annat fall återsänder vi dem. VÄRMEFORSK STIPENDIUM 2010: Värmeforsk är ett forsknings- och utvecklingsföretag med huvudinriktning på områden som berör produktion av värme och el.Värmeforsks stipendium 2010 är ett bidrag till teknisk utrustning eller studieresa för högst 35.000 kr. Den tekniska utrustningen eller studieresan ska ingå i ett arbete som bidrar till uppbyggnad av kunskap inom något av Värmeforsks områden: Miljöfrågor relaterade till bränslebaserad energiproduktion; Förbränningsteknik för värme- och elproduktion; Materialutveckling för högtemperaturtillämpningar; Styr- och reglertekniska frågor; Systemlösningar som inbegriper värmetekniska anläggningar; Effektivisering av lut- och barkpannor i skogindustrin; Utveckling av energigrödor; och Forskning kring ökad resursanvändning av energiaskor. Du som söker ska vara forskarstuderande, göra examensarbete eller vara anställd i företag som tillhör Värmeforsks medlemskrets och arbeta med utveckling som är relevant för dessa områden. Svenska institutets Östersjöprogram VISBYPROGRAMMET utlyser medel för samarbete inom utbildning och forskning med följande länder: Estland, Lettland, Litauen, Polen, Ryssland, Ukraina och Vitryssland. Visbyprogrammet stödjer projektsamarbeten och stöd till anordnande av konferenser. Svenska studenter och forskare kan också söka individuella stipendier. Riksbyggens Jubileumsfond DEN GODA STADEN delar ut stipendier för att stödja forskning, utveckling och utbildning för bättre bomiljö inom områden som arkitektur, byggnadsteknik, fastighetsförvaltning, energiförsörjning, miljövård, samhälls- och trafikplanering. Från 1991 till 2009 har fonden delat ut 109 stipendier till ett värde av ca 6,8 miljoner kronor. Riksbyggen utlyser nu 2010 års stipendier. Fonden kommer 2010 att dela ut 600 000 kronor fördelat på minst 4 stipendier. Fonden bedömer ansökningarna med hänsyn till kvalitet och hur det i ansökan beskrivna projektets resultat har förutsättningar att bli en viktig del i att skapa bättre bomiljöer. Projekten som fonden stödjer skall ha direkt anknytning till bostads- och stadsmiljöfrågor. Fonden stödjer i första hand projekt där fonden är huvudfinansiär eller där projektet utgör en urskiljbar del i ett större sammanhang. -- Den 2 mars 2010 är sista dagen för ansökan om stipendier. BOOK CONTRIBUTION
CALL FOR PAPERS: We are seeking papers for a peer-reviewed book on color and design to be published by Berg. Working title: COLOR AND DESIGN. Edited by Marilyn DeLong and Barbara Martinson. Cognition, context and culture are all vital to the way we experience color. From the products we use, the clothes that we wear, and the spaces we inhabit, color provides both visual appeal and information. Our proposed book, Color and Design, addresses how we experience color through specific examples of how color is used in the design disciplines. While other books devoted to color contain basic information regarding color theory and color use, this book intends to foster a greater understanding of color through the in-depth analysis of specific cases. These examples will explore color as a cultural phenomenon, a pragmatic device for communication, and as a valuable marketing tool. Based in the disciplines of clothing design, graphic design, interior design, and product design, this book will be a valuable resource for both design practitioners and scholars. -- Paper Length: We are looking for both longer papers (6,000-8,000 words) and shorter "snapshot" length papers (2000 words). Timeline and Review Process: February 2010: Submit your idea for a paper to the editors (include either a short bio or abbreviated vitae). Editors will then request an abstract. April 2010: Abstracts sent to editors. August 2010: Full papers due. Final manuscripts will be reviewed by editors and contributors. Fall 2011: Revision and book publication.
