Titel: "WE DON'T WANT NO EDUCATION" - TURNING LEARNING INSIDE-OUT BY
"MASHING-UP" LEARNING RESOURCES
Abstract: In my talk I will discuss the rise of informal (lifelong) learning, as fueled both by emerging attitudes to knowledge-sharing (such as Open Access, Open Archives Initiative, Open Educational Reseources, Open Knowledge Initiative, Open Research, ...) and technology (especially the Internet and so called "social software" based on Web 2.0 technologies). I will discuss some of the disruptive consequences that this development
is bound to have for the business models of higher education. -- The KMR-group is presently involved in 3 leading-edge European projects that are related to this issue: Organic.Edunet (www.organic-edunet.eu), H-net (www.hematologynet.eu), and ROLE (www.role-project.eu).

ECLECTIC TECH CARNIVAL (/ETC) i Umeå 8-12 juni 2009. Mer information: <http://eclectictechcarnival.org/node/869>

KONFERENSER/CONFERENCES
The Nordic Association for Architectural Research and the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art, NTNU, are looking forward to arranging an international conference on the subject ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM in Trondheim, Norway 23-25 April 2009. Architecture is a cultural expression that to a great extent influences both public and private space. Thereby, in an important way, it creates possibilities and limitations to how people can live their lives. A critical discussion of the quality of architecture is vital to enable the creation of surroundings that give life the best possibilities to unfold and develop. Even if it already exists a public critique of architecture, this has not by far the scope that is necessary to reach this goal. The professional or academic foundations of architectural critique vary a lot as well. Consequently, one question that rises from the point of view of research in architecture, is whether research may contribute to create criticism with a more solid foundation. Consequently, the title and the topic of the conference is ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM. We will not deal with architectural criticism as such, but with the relationship between research and criticism, in other words how research may contribute to criticism and what criticism may offer research. -- Conference e-mail: <arkitekturkritikk@ab.ntnu.no> Conference url: <http://www.ntnu.no/ab/konferanser>

Call for papers: CHANGING CULTURES: CULTURES OF CHANGE, a three-day conference, 10-12 December 2009, Barcelona, Spain, organised by the EU-funded research network ATACD, A topological Approach to Cultural Dynamics. Across disciplines, topological or intensive approaches to the study of culture treat change as normal and immanent rather than exceptional and externally determined. In these approaches, cultures are defined by the possibilities they offer for change rather than by their size, location or essence. These approaches thus provide a set of tools and concepts to think about different levels and kinds of change – learning, transmission, innovation, adaptation, self-organisation and evolution. This conference asks: what is the potential of topological and other intensive approaches to culture and space for thinking about change? Plenary speakers who have confirmed so far include: Rosi Braidotti, Manuel DeLanda, J. Doyne Farmer, Matthew Fuller, Alex Galloway, Penny Harvey, Scott Lash, Richard Rogers, Luc Steels, Eyal Weizmann. --The deadline for paper submissions to the conference is Thursday 28 May 2009. Abstracts with a max length of 300 words will need to be submitted online in text only format (no diagrams, tables or graphs are permitted). Full instructions for online submission can be found on the ATACD website <http://www.atacd.net>.

EYE OF THE STORM – AN INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE ON SCIENTIFIC CONTROVERSY, 19 / 20 June 2009, Tate Britain, Millbank, London SW1, UK. EYE OF THE STORM aims to explore a range of controversies, from esoteric arguments between physicists over the structure of the universe, to disputes about the causes of species decline and climate change, and highly charged public controversies around the use of stem cells and the distribution of genetically modified organisms. When heated debates around the challenge of climate change have shown how abstruse uncertainties within a scientific community can be amplified and distorted to challenge the whole notion of human-caused greenhouse warming, EYE OF THE STORM sets out to examine the relationship between scientific uncertainty and public controversies around science.

OCCUPATION: NEGOTIATIONS WITH CONSTRUCTED SPACE, University of Brighton, School of Architecture and Design, Interior Architecture and Urban Studies Programme, Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th of July 2009. The Conference: An abiding concern for designers of interior space is the way that buildings and places are used or occupied. Issues of inhabitation, enclosure and containment are of critical importance in this new century and an understanding of relationships between politics, place and space is indispensable for any sort of practice today. Researchers, practitioners and students in the fields of interiors, art, architecture and spatial design must be open to alternative readings of territory and a range of spatial practices. This three-day conference will be concerned with the motivations, forces, constraints and drives in design for occupation. Fred Scott states that "The function of buildings in human affairs is more correctly described through patterns or rituals of occupation. Buildings will otherwise resist description in terms of more precise functions; as James Gowan has sometimes commented to me, 'I can eat a sandwich in any size of room'. The intended fit between function and space can be elusive, unfocused, but the image is vivid, which is the reason why the idea of obsolescence is so uncertain with regards to buildings" (Fred Scott, 'On Altering Architecture', Routledge, 2008). Occupation may be benign or may be achieved through the acquisition of territory by force - processes of control of people and places. Occupation may also be a state of mind where daily routines and activity are curtailed, moulded and adapted to a particular environment. Equally, spaces may be composed or formed through processes and layers of inhabitation. The conference theme, OCCUPATION will address the friction and negotiation that exists between built space and Inhabitants. -- Presentations will be divided into four areas in order to open ways of thinking about designing for occupation. Contributions are invited from designers, artists, practitioners, teachers, students and all those interested in the disciplines of architecture, interiors and spatial design. 5th Global Conference CREATIVE ENGAGEMENTS – THINKING WITH CHILDREN, Friday 17th July – Sunday 19th July 2009. The fifth meeting of this global research project shall explore the many facets of creative engagement with children. Grounded in an inter-disciplinary perspective and with reference to historical and contemporary representations of childhood, this project will examine the complex issues which surround the notion and practices of creative engagement in the context of pedagogy and the curriculum, and in the face of frequently instrumental institutional imperatives. More generally, our work will also address the role of creativity in social interaction, with particular reference to children's development of life skills, autonomy and independence in an increasingly complex and demanding world. Temat för sammankomsten är CODEX AND CODE: AESTHETICS, LANGUAGE AND POLITICS IN AN AGE OF DIGITAL MEDIA. Webbsida: <www.norlit.org>

RGS-IBG Annual Conference SENSEWALKING: SENSORY WALKING METHODS FOR SOCIAL SCIENTISTS in Manchester, 26-28 August 2009. Convenors: Mags Adams (University of Salford) and Kye Askins (Northumbria University). In recent years there has been a growing interest in the role of non-visual senses in the relationships between people and places, in particular how ‘sense of place’ involves complex corporeal encounters with our environments – how we ‘sense’ place in terms of sound, smell, touch, taste (alongside sight) as well as understand it through social constructions and circulated texts (Wylie, 2005; Butler, 2006; Edensor, 2006; Pink, 2007). Researchers from across disciplines have worked with the ‘sensory walking’ concept, utilising sensewalks, soundwalks, listening walks and smell walks as a means to involve participants in discussion, interview, photo-survey, GIS mapping and sound recording, among other innovations/ adaptations. While a recent ESRC seminar series addressed ‘Sensescapes’ more broadly there has not been a concerted effort to bring together researchers working with beyond-the-visual senses as method. This session seeks to rectify such a gap and welcomes papers from geographers, sociologists, artists, anthropologists, planners, landscape architects and designers (amongst others), acknowledging the multi-disciplinary nature of much of the work in this area.
