SEXUATE SUBJECTS: POLITICS, POETICS AND ETHICS, Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th December 2010, UCL, London. This international interdisciplinary event will examine how political, poetic and ethical practice and thought engage with questions of sexuality and sexual difference on a global stage. At a time when women’s and minority group rights are still frequently under-represented and marginalised in mainstream global discussions of citizenship and democracy, culture, health and community life, Sexuate Subjects responds to French thinker, Luce Irigaray’s theory of ”sexuate difference” for enabling critically-aware global formations of self-identity and community, art, architectural and spatial practices, ecology, environmental care and sustainability, health and bio-medically assisted life. In particular, Sexuate Subjects will focus on these different relationships as they are expressed in political, poetic and ethical practice and thought in disciplines including: architecture, art, literature, modern languages, philosophy, the political and social sciences. Key questions being discussed include: Where are ”global” women in contemporary approaches to health matters?; How are political, poetic and ethical issues addressed in feminist/feminine architectural and spatial practice?; How can sexuate ecologies and environmental practices inform global sustainability?; How can art inform conflict resolution?; Why poetry matters in thought, ethical and political life; How can sexuate difference inform the ethics of global education?; and How can feminist bio-ethics inform approaches to women’s and body-rights, fertility and population health? -- The Conference is being developed in conjunction with UCL’s Grand Research Challenge Intercultural Interactions, the US-based Luce Irigaray Circle, and Fatale (Feminist Architectural Theory Analysis, Laboratory and Education) at KTH, Stockholm. Confirmed keynote speakers: Professor Elizabeth Grosz (Rutgers University, New Jersey); Dr Doina Petrescu (Atelier d’Architecture Autogré and the University of Sheffield); FATALE Prof Katja Grillner, Dr Meike Schalk, Dr Katarina Bonnevier (KTH Stockholm); The Karen Burke Memorial Lecture (sponsored by the Luce Irigaray Circle). -- For general enquiries about the event please email Peg Rawes on <m.rawes@ucl.ac.uk> and at

Call for Papers: DISABILITY AND PUBLIC SPACE
The Disability Studies working group at Oslo University College is pleased to announce a call for proposals for an interdisciplinary conference. Dates: April 28-29, 2011. Location: Oslo University College, Oslo, Norway. Host and sponsors: Oslo University College (through the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Urban Research program), The Research Council of Norway (through the Rehabilitation as Conflict project), and the Fritt Ord foundation. -- Background and themes: Disability, accessibility and the right to participate fully in all aspects of life are becoming increasingly prominent topics in a variety of disciplines. The conference aims to explore these topics from a variety of perspectives, bringing together researchers and professionals from the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and urban studies. The background for the conference is partly the expansion of interdisciplinary research on disability, including cultural, historical and interactional studies, and partly the increase in legislative initiatives, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. A primary objective for the conference is to promote dialogue and research across both disciplinary and geographical boundaries. Plenary speakers include Professor Rosemarie Garland-Thomson of Emory University, Professor Susan Schweik of the University of California at Berkeley, and Professor Rob Imrie of King’s College, London. The interface between public space and disability needs to be more extensively explored in research that includes both empirical and theoretical studies. We encourage submissions from researchers in the humanities and the social sciences, law and the health sciences, as well as built environment engineering and urban planning. Topics include, but are not limited to: Abstracts (maximum 300 words) and queries should be submitted by December 15th , 2010 to: <publicspace@hio.no>. See also: http://www.hio.no/Enheter/Avdeling-for-helsefag-HF/Disability-Studies-Working-Group Notification about accepted papers will be sent by February 15th, 2011. There is no attendance fee. Participants are requested to cover and arrange for travel and accommodation on their own, but information on transportation and local hotels will be provided. Accessibility requirements for presenters will be addressed.

THE UTOPIA OF TRADITION, IASTE 2010, International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments, American University of Beirut, 15-18 December 2010. In recent years IASTE scholars have examined traditions and their multitude of built forms in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. To advance this effort, this conference seeks to study how tradition inspires and informs changing concepts of utopia in theory and space. Utopian theories and plans emerge from a complex symbiotic relationship with traditions that are based on notions of the ideal. Indeed, utopias cannot be understood without understanding the traditions from which they develop. At its etymological root, utopia embodies both the theoretical paradox of an ideal place, eu-topia, and a non-place, ou-topia, rendering it an impossibility. -- This IASTE conference will focus on the theme of utopia and tradition in the twenty-first century. The conference will attract an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners from around the world working in the disciplines of anthropology, architecture, art and architectural history, city and regional planning, cultural studies, geography, history, landscape studies, sociology, and urban studies. Abstracts are invited for the ECONOMY CONFERENCE, to be held at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University on 6th-8th July 2011. The word ‘economy’ first described the management of a household. It comes from the Greek oikonomia /oikous (house) and nemein (manage) but its description of domestic frugality bears little relation to the contemporary ‘economy’ of governments and financial markets. Economies and capital are central to the dynamics of construction and urbanism, in ordering and disordering patterns of production and consumption. Given the collapse and mismanagement of the larger households of our societies, is it not vital to now evaluate the multiple meanings and potentials contained within this word? This international conference invites papers that investigate economy under the following themes:
Dwelling and Economy; Economy and/of Means; Politics of Economy; Architecture and Capital; Defining Value. -- Further details can be found here: <www.cardiff.ac.uk/archi/economy> Deadline for abstracts: 7th January 2011

CHAPTER AUTHORS

Call for expressions of interest: SUSTAINABLE STOCKHOLM is the working title for a book planned within the ABE School to be published for an international audience. We will produce a high quality book that will present a picture of how the ABE school works with urban sustainability issues and that can also be used as course literature, within ABE and in other contexts. We are now recruiting chapter authors and editors from throughout ABE. We hope to provide some funds for writers and editors; exact amounts will depend on the contribution of each author as well as the funds available. The audience for the book includes both researchers and practitioners. The book will be peer-reviewed and written for an academic audience, but should also written with practitioners in mind. Depending on the financing secured for the book, the chapter materials may be the basis for both an academic book, course materials and/or a popular science version. -- Preliminary publication schedule: 22 November 2010: deadline for expressions of interest (guidelines below); Late January 2010: editors committee formed, contacts with potential funders and publishers; Spring 2011-Fall 2011: writing and editing of contents; Spring 2012 manuscript to print. For any questions, contact the Urban Cluster (urbancluster@abe.kth.se) or Jonathan Metzger, jonathan.metzger@abe.kth.se

-- Beslutsdatum: Juni 2011 Vid frågor, kontakta: Forskningssekreterare Kristina Björnberg, Tfn 08-7754052, mobil 070-4920623, <kristina.bjornberg@formas.se> Alt Forskningssekreterare Johan Eellend, Tfn 08-7754022, mobil 070-6984022, <johan.eellend@formas.se>
