URBANITET OCH INNOVATION -- ett seminarium om stadsliv och stadsrum från industrisamhälle till upplevelseekonomi. Seminariet kommer att hållas 15-16/10 2009 i Borås Museums lokaler alt. på Textilmuseet i Borås. CALL FOR PAPERS: Borås Museum har i samarbete med Chalmers Tekniska högskola glädjen att bjuda in till seminariet Urbanitet och Innovation. Vi välkomnar forskare på doktorand och post. dok nivå samt professionella antikvarier, arkitekter osv, att presentera tankar om stadsliv och stadsrum i en artikel och en presentation i seminarieform. Artiklarna kommer därefter redigeras i en antologi med utgivning under våren 2010. Utgångspunkten för seminariet är att belysa staden som en förändringsprocess i tid och rum påverkad av ständigt skiftande sociala och kulturella processer och rumsliga och arkitektoniska ideal. Borås Museum ser detta som en del i en pågående ansträngning att dokumentera och utforska staden som ett historiskt fenomen som bär spår av det förgångna i sin struktur men också ständigt förnyas. Borås som industristad under förändring i vad som kallats ett nätverkssamhälle och en upplevelseekonomi är givetvis en utgångspunkt, men vi välkomnar också analyser av andra förändringsprocesser. Seminariets tre teman är: Staden ur kulturellt, socialt, rumsligt och arkitektoniskt perspektiv; Förändringens utgångspunkter i stadens historia och identitet; Förnyelsens former och konkreta uttryck. Vi ser gärna att dessa ämnen behandlas utifrån innovativa teoretiska aspekter med en tydlig koppling till staden som både ett samtida och ett historiskt fenomen. CALL FOR PAPERS: The Nordic Association for Architectural Research and the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art, NTNU, are looking forward to arranging an international conference on the subject ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM in Trondheim, Norway 23-25 April 2009. Architecture is a cultural expression that to a great extent influences both public and private space. Thereby, in an important way, it creates possibilities and limitations to how people can live their lives. A critical discussion of the quality of architecture is vital to enable the creation of surroundings that give life the best possibilities to unfold and develop. Even if it already exists a public critique of architecture, this has not by far the scope that is necessary to reach this goal. The professional or academic foundations of architectural critique vary a lot as well. Consequently, one question that rises from the point of view of research in architecture, is whether research may contribute to create criticism with a more solid foundation. Consequently, the title and the topic of the conference is ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM. We will not deal with architectural criticism as such, but with the relationship between research and criticism, in other words how research may contribute to criticism and what criticism may offer research. -- Papers ought to be written and presented in English. CALL FOR PAPERS: 5th Global Conference CREATIVE ENGAGEMENTS - THINKING WITH CHILDREN, Friday 17th July - Sunday 19th July 2009. The fifth meeting of this global research project shall explore the many facets of creative engagement with children. Grounded in an inter-disciplinary perspective and with reference to historical and contemporary representations of childhood, this project will examine the complex issues which surround the notion and practices of creative engagement in the context of pedagogy and the curriculum, and in the face of frequently instrumental institutional imperatives. More generally, our work will also address the role of creativity in social interaction, with particular reference to children's development of life skills, autonomy and independence in an increasingly complex and demanding world. -- Papers, presentations, reports and workshops are invited on any of the following four focus areas: 1. Creativity, Engagement and Education; 2. Creativity, Pedagogy and Curriculum; 3. Critical and Cultural Thinking and Children; and 4. Engagement, Skills and Life Issues. CALL FOR PAPERS: 15-17 juni 2009 arrangerar ACSIS en stor nationell forskarkonferens med titeln Kultur~Natur. Avsikten är att sätta kulturforskningens grundvalsfrågor på dagordningen. Av alla de otaliga kulturdefinitioner som förekommer hör den som ställer kultur mot natur till de mest fundamentala. I dagens värld gör inte minst klimatets och genetikens aktuella språng att denna polaritet rubbas. Konferensens huvudtema utvecklas bland annat i inledningsanföranden och plenarsessioner. Sessioner och papers behöver dock inte förhålla sig aktivt till temat - konferensens övergripande mål är att samla och presentera kulturforskningen i dess hela bredd och omfattning. Vi inbjuder nu forskare och doktorander att sända in förslag på papers, i första hand till de 23 sessioner som finns presenterade på konferensens hemsida. Registrations are now open for the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: KEEPING THE PAST PUBLIC: the Documentation and Conservation of Modern Places, February 4-6, 2009, University of Melbourne, Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning. This symposium will examine the myriad of challenges surrounding the documentation and conservation of twentieth century sites, including individual buildings, townscapes and communities. Emphasis will be focused on the architectural legacy of Modernism, in all its international guises, and on public sites. These discussions on Modern sites will be complemented by other presentations on the management of townscapes in contexts that are much older (for instance Afghanistan and Indonesia), but that face fundamental challenges presented by twentieth century effects of war and globalization. Symposium international plenary speakers include: Hilde Heynen (K U Leuven) "Designing welfare. The reconfiguration of public space in Flanders (1958-1978)"; Miles Glendinning (Edinburgh College of Art) "The Forgotten Revolution? MAKING SENSE, an international, multi-disciplinary colloquium 25/09/2009: At this colloquium we will bring the artist, curator and philosopher together, through the medium of academia, with the intent of finding new ways to frame and develop discourse. We want to create a common language that expresses how we can make sense of the world today, through the creation and reception of contemporary art. We intend this conference to bring together key players from the world of art, aesthetic philosophy and contemporary theory, in a way that can provide 'live' source material for debate and research, and so create an interface for new thought. Our main speakers secured for this event are the French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy and the French installation artist Sophie Calle. Our slogan MAKING SENSE begins from an explicitly Nancean thesis, and intends to mobilise the contemporary aesthetic theory and 'sense' of Jean-Luc Nancy, in relation to current works of art, and how they are shown to us by curatorial practice. The intent is to apply a theoretical debate about sense to a contemporary praxis that can 'make sense', as developed through what we can see from contemporary art, and how we actually see it. -- The Colloquium itself will take place at The Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages, The University of Cambridge, 25th September, 2009. WORKSHOP
Free introduction to PARAMETRIC DESIGN application GenerativeComponents, KTH, Stockholm, Friday 6th of February 2009, 8.30-17.00. We are happy to invite you to a one day introduction workshop in GenerativeComponents (GC), Bentley's innovative software for generative design. The workshop will be held at the KTH School of Engineering and Management in Stockholm, and is primarily open to architectural and engineering students and young professionals from any teaching institution, as well as applicants to the SmartGeometry 2009 San Francisco workshop. The workshop will be facilitated by Lars Hesselgren (research director KPF/founding partner SmartGeometry Group) and Jonas Runberger (KTH/AA School of Architecture/Scheiwiller Svensson Architects) and assisting tutors. 40 seats are available and participation is free. Language will be English. The workshop is presented by Bentley Systems in collaboration with the SmartGeometry Group and the KTH department of Industrial Engineering and Management. No prior knowledge of the software is needed, but some skills in digital modeling will be helpful. Bentley will grant participants a one-year GenerativeComponents Discovery Subscription. A personal laptop running windows is required. The software will be made available prior to the event, and must be downloaded and installed before the workshop starts. FULBRIGHT GRANTS for Visiting Lecturers and Research Scholars Advanced Research and University Lecturing Awards in the United States, Academic Year 2009/10. The Fulbright Commission announces that grants will be available for Swedish scholars to lecture and/or conduct research in the United States during the 2009/10 academic year. The grants are intended for Swedish scholars who have already established affiliation with an American university or research center. Applications will be accepted in all fields. The competition is open to all scholars with a doctoral degree, irrespective of one's current academic rank. Applications are welcome from recent postdoctoral scholars to full professors. Scholars who have not yet completed their doctoral degree at the time of application must present evidence of completion of the degree prior to departure to the United States. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to spend one academic year at an American university or research center and who have not visited the United States recently or extensively. LARS ERIK LUNDBERGS STIPENDIESTIFTELSE sökes senast den 6 februari. Stiftelsens ändamål är att stödja vetenskaplig forskning och forskarutbildning inom arkitektur, byggnadsteknik, stadsplanering, boende och fastighetsförvaltning. Inom boende och fastighetsförvaltning är ett viktigt område villkoren för fastighetsägande och förvaltning med hänsyn till skatteregler, statliga och kommunala normer och lagstiftning. Stiftelsens ändamål skall i första hand främjas genom personliga stipendier till unga forskarstuderande verksamma vid tekniska högskolor och universitet i Sverige. Stipenium ur STIFTELSEN HÖJERINGS BOKFÖRLAG FÖR STOCKHOLMIANAS FOND. Samfundet S:t Erik kommer vid sitt årsmöte att dela ut ett stipendium på 40.000 kr ur denna fond. Vi söker en forskare, vars forskning handlar om Stockholm och som står i begrepp att publicera sitt forskningsresultat i bokform. Riksbyggens Jubileumsfond DEN GODA STADEN utlyser stipendier. Jubileumsfonden delar ut stipendier för att stödja forskning, utveckling och utbildning för bättre bomiljö inom områden som arkitektur, byggnadsteknik, fastighetsförvaltning, energiförsörjning, miljövård, samhälls- och trafikplanering. Totalt kommer fonden 2009 att dela ut 600 000 kr, till minst 4 stipendiater. Högsta belopp en stipendiat kan få är 200 000 kr. Fonden bedömer ansökningarna med hänsyn till kvalitet och hur det i ansökan beskrivna projektets resultat har förutsättningar att bli en viktig del i att skapa bättre bomiljöer. Projekten som fonden stödjer skall ha direkt anknytning till bostads- och stadsmiljöfrågor. Fonden stödjer i första hand projekt där fonden är huvudfinansiär eller där projektet utgör en urskiljbar del i ett större sammanhang. -- Den 2 mars 2009 är sista dagen för ansökan om stipendier. Webb, University of Houston (bwebb@uh.edu) http://www.jaeonline.org/ -- Since the eighteenth century, the vernacular has served to dialectically challenge mainstream architectural establishments. Based in the linguistic distinction between Latin and locally spoken languages of the "people," vernacular was borrowed from discourse on linguistics and culture to architecture as a way to recognize the empirical genius and vitality of indigenous architecture distinct from classical architecture and its codes. Throughout the twentieth century, rural building traditions inspired anti-academic, anti-historicist architecture - from Adolf Loos to José Luis Sert and Marcel Breuer. A parallel interest in the industrial vernacular as a product of "anonymous" and rational engineering was advanced by socially-minded architects, urbanists, and historians such as Walter Gropius, Ernst May, Le Corbusier, and Siegfried Giedion. These and others variously advocated a manner of building largely based on efficiency and optimal performance, informed by a vernacular and in opposition to bourgeoisie aesthetics. During the 1960s and 70s American architects such as Robert Venturi - Denise Scott Brown and Charles W. Moore exploited the exuberant commercial vernacular of American highways as a foil to a received modernism mired in sterile uniformity. Viewed in terms of the oppositional role they have historically played in cultural-political contestation, what role is there for vernaculars in contemporary practice? Do methods and processes drawn from "outsider" (i.e. non- professional) sources affect contemporary design and discourse, or have they been supplanted by formulaic attitudes of architectural practice and production? Do vital contemporary vernaculars continue to inform and challenge contemporary architectural ideas, practice, and education? This issue of the JAE invites text based (scholarship of design) and design based (design as scholarship) submissions that explore the impact of vernaculars in modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism.
