The INTERNATIONAL HFT SUMMER SCHOOL takes place at the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart 14-25 September 2009. This academic event and workshop is offered by the Faculty of Architecture and Design. The topic of the HFT SUMMER SCHOOL will focus on energetic aspects of the building envelope therefore the event will be titled FUTURE BUILDING ENVELOPES. The HFT SUMMER SCHOOL is open to students, graduates, lecturers, and professors, and to all who are open to the new and the unexpected. During the workshop we want to test the individuals‚ expressive capabilities, sharpen their senses, and conquer new territories together in a creative experimental process. Please note the date of the event for your faculty's planning for the academic year 2009. Please inform your students (e.g. Erasmus Program) coming to us in the winter term 2009/2010 about this workshop. Forskarutbildningskurs: ATT KOMMUNICERA FORSKNING, 1N 5504, 7,5 högskolepoäng: Avd. för teknik- och vetenskaphistoria ger under hösten 2009 en doktorandkurs på 7,5 hp som tränar några av de färdigheter som krävs för att kunna kommunicera sin forskning både inom och utom den akademiska världen. Anmälan ska skickas till kursansvarig Nina Wormbs (nina@kth.se) senast den 8 september 2009. -- Kursen ges till forskarstuderande som läst Introduktion till forskarutbildningen eller på annat sätt förvärvat motsvarande kunskaper. För att kunna tillgodogöra sig kursen bör man ha kommit en bit på väg med sitt avhandlingsarbete. Syftet med kursen är att träna den forskarstuderande i att kommunicera sin forskning inom och utom den akademiska världen samt att delta i det pågående akademiska samtalet. ATT ÅLDRAS MED FUNKTIONSHINDER - FLERVETENSKAPLIGA PERSPEKTIV/AGEING WITH A DISABILITY - INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES, 3,5 alt. 6 högskolepoäng. Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments - CASE Forskarskola vid Lunds universitet anordnar under höstterminen 2009 en forskarutbildningskurs ”Att åldras med funktionshinder”. Denna tvärvetenskapliga kurs syftar till att öka kunskapen om hur det är att leva med fysiskt eller psykiskt funktionsnedsättning under många år och hur åldrandet ter sig för dessa personer. Kursen omfattar 3.5 hp med möjlighet till fördjupning motsvarande 6 hp. FORUM FÖR TRÄDGÅRDSHISTORISK FORSKNING ger seminariet TRÄDGÅRD OCH TEXT den 2-3 oktober 2009. Trädgården har en framträdande plats i många romaner, som i Johan Wolfgang von Goethes Valfrändskap där trädgården är en av huvudpersonerna, eller i Thomas Manns Buddenbrooks där alla viktiga beslut fattas i trädgården eller på promenad i Lübecks utkanter. Hit hör exempelvis också Raymond Roussels surrealistiska roman Locus Solus från 1914, som utspelar sig i parken vid uppfinnaren och professorn Canterels egendom Locus Solus utanför Paris, där besökarna möter Canterels märkliga uppfinningar och samlingar under rundvandringen i parken. Men trädgården kan också vara platsen för texter av olika slag. Den mest uppenbara är kanske den botaniska trädgården där växterna är försedda med vetenskapliga namnskyltar. Men det finns också många trädgårdar vars gestaltning bygger på texter av olika slag. Ett sådant exempel är Hallsbergs stenar i sydöstra Skåne, där en lantbrukare i slutet av 1800-talet skapade sin egen paradisträdgård med stenar med texter inspirerade av Bibeln och med växter som Kristi bloddroppar och Mose brinnande buske, ett annat Mellors garden söder om Manchester i England, anlagd på 1800-talet efter John Bunyans 1600-talsallegori Kristens resa med platser som Fåfängans marknad, slottet Tvivel och Himmelska Staden. En nutida anläggning där textfragment fått en central roll är landskapsparken vid Wij trädgårdar i Gästrikland, där tanken är att skulptur och text ska stå i dialog med fältens energigrödor. THE POLITICS OF LIFE: MICHEL FOUCAULT AND THE BIOPOLITICS OF MODERNITY, conference at IASPIS, Sep 3-5, Maria Skolgata 83, 2nd floor, Stockholm. This symposium is arranged by the Institution of Culture and Communication at Södertörn University, Campus Flemingsberg, and The International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm (IASPIS). -- Ever since the concepts of “biopolitics” and “biopower” appeared in the first volume of Michel Foucault's The History of Sexuality in 1976, they have continued to provoke responses. In 1976 Foucault picks up themes already developed in Discipline and Punish, and describes a shift in the structure of power that takes us from the epoch of sovereignty, in which the right of the ruler is to take life or let live, to the modern conception of power as a way to enhance, render productive, compose, maximize, and administer life. In some respects this is an undeniable progress toward a more “humane” world, but, as Foucault underlines, it also leads to a biological conception of politics. To exterminate the enemy, to expel the degenerate, the enemy of the people or the class from the social body in order to attain purity-all of this will become possible precisely because the body politic comes to be perceived as a living entity that must be attended to, and not just a source of disturbances that must be repressed. Foucault's research, which soon came to graft the concept of biopolitics onto the idea of a modern form of “governmentality”, has been a major source of inspiration for philosophy, political science and gender studies, as well as in bioethics and analyses of security apparatuses and techniques of surveillance. Foucault's ideas have been critically extended in the highly diverse ways, often taking them far beyond their initial formulations-all of which indicate the extent to which thinking with, through, beyond and perhaps also against the questions posed by Foucault has proved to be a highly fertile ground for research. -- In this way, the conference takes its point of departure in the work of Foucault, but with the intention of assessing the applicability of his thought to the present, which undoubtedly also means to envisage the possibility of different futures. Scientific Conference: IDENTITY AND DEVELOPMENT, Riga, October 13-14, 2009, Riga Technical University, Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning. URBAN CINEMATICS: Film, City & Narrative, a two-day international symposium at the University of Cambridge, Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), December 8 & 9, 2009 CALL FOR PAPERS. Conference summary: Urban Cinematics will explore the use of cinema & the moving image as a way to investigate the phenomena, experience and narrative of cities by exploring the following themes: Montaged Urban Cinematic Landscapes: Montage-based films -without human leads - are usually referred to as city symphonies, a genre that flourished in the 1920s but which is still very present in contemporary moving image works. With the city as its subject, city symphonies not only represent the city as such, they also invent the city, enables its imagination and creation, and bring out the hidden, silent and invisible features of the city to public consciousness; Cinematic Urban Archaeology: A cinematic archaeology of a city makes visible the becoming of the modern city and its subsequent transformations since 1895. Such retrospectively longitudinal cinematic studies of cities are now possible through increasing availability of archive material. Such exploration of the filmic spaces of the past may enable historians, architects and urbanists to better anticipate the city of the future; Geographies of the Urban Cinematic Landscape: Cinema may use cities in creative ways to reorganize city spaces into narrative geographies where urban fragments are collaged into spatial episodes. The alternative to creative geographies is cinematic topographical coherence. Both approaches - used in montage as well as in continuity editing traditions - may give different readings of the city and have a different impact on our spatial perception; Cinematic Mapping: Bird's eye views of cities are common in cartography and planning representation while, in contrast to airborne geographical mapping, cinema is essentially concerned with the tactility of the on-the-ground experience, and formulates the city from the inside. There are numerous examples of films demonstrating cinema's capacity to reconcile the optic - the bird's eye view - with the haptic and the lived experience - a key component of the perceptual panoply in grasping and communicating the modern metropolis; Cinema as a form of spatial and social practice: Films can reveal social practices where social relations are spatially organised: cinema makes explicit the relationship between the geography of an area within the social order and practice of the time. As characters move through the city, the urban topographies forms a spatially organised social system. In doing so cinema renders a tangible vision of a reality through situations and provides a passage between an aesthetics of representation with an aesthetic of perception - thus enhancing our largely fragmentary knowledge of cities. -- We welcome abstracts of no more than 300 words. MAKING SENSE, an international, multi-disciplinary colloquium 25/09/2009: At this colloquium we will bring the artist, curator and philosopher together, through the medium of academia, with the intent of finding new ways to frame and develop discourse. We want to create a common language that expresses how we can make sense of the world today, through the creation and reception of contemporary art. We intend this conference to bring together key players from the world of art, aesthetic philosophy and contemporary theory, in a way that can provide 'live' source material for debate and research, and so create an interface for new thought. Our main speakers secured for this event are the French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy and the French installation artist Sophie Calle. Our slogan MAKING SENSE begins from an explicitly Nancean thesis, and intends to mobilise the contemporary aesthetic theory and 'sense' of Jean-Luc Nancy, in relation to current works of art, and how they are shown to us by curatorial practice. The intent is to apply a theoretical debate about sense to a contemporary praxis that can 'make sense', as developed through what we can see from contemporary art, and how we actually see it. -- The Colloquium itself will take place at The Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages, The University of Cambridge, 25th September, 2009. CALL FOR PAPERS: LIMINAL LANDSCAPES: RE-MAPPING THE FIELD, symposium at the Liverpool John Moores University, 1st July 2010. Convenors: Dr Hazel Andrews, (Tourism, Consumer and Food Studies, LJMU); Dr Kevin Meethan, Department of Sociology, University of Plymouth; and Dr Les Roberts (School of Architecture, University of Liverpool). Ideas and concepts of liminality have long shaped debates around the uses and practices of space in tourism. Victor Turner's writings on ritual and communitas, Graburn's theory of tourism as a sacred journey, or Shield's discussion of 'places on the margin' have secured a well-established foothold in the theoretical landscapes of travel and mobility. The unique qualities of liminal landscapes, as developed by these and other writers on the subject, are generally held to be those which play host to ideas of the ludic, consumption, carnivalesque, inversion or suspension of normative social and moral structures of everyday life, deterritorialisation and 'becoming', and so on. While these arguments and tropes remain pertinent, and their metaphorical appeal evermore attractive, the extent to which these spaces provoke counter ideas of social control, terror, surveillance, production and territorialisation, invites an urgent call to re-evaluate the meanings attached to ideas of the 'liminal' in tourism studies. The deaths of 21 Chinese migrant workers in Morecambe Bay in 2004 has prompted a sobering re-assessment of the coastal resort as a site of tourism, leisure and consumption. The shifting social geographies associated with these landscapes has meant that the example of the beach may equally be looked upon as a space of transnational labour, migrancy, racial tension, death, fear, uncertainty and disorientation. In this instance, the precarious and unnavigable natural landscape of Morecambe sands becomes a metonym for the increasingly de-stabilising landscapes of trans- or post-national capitalist mobility. Moreover, the settlement of asylum seekers and refugees in UK coastal resorts such as Margate has exposed the underlying tensions and social divisions between representations that play on the ludic, touristic heritage of these resorts and those which address the marginality and exclusion that characterises the other set of mobilities and meanings evoked by these spaces. In addition, the appropriation of liminal landscapes by, for example, local authorities, commercial bodies and marketeers constructs an increasingly mediated or textualised space of performance that re-fashions the embodied (and embedded) spaces as lived by those who make up their diverse social fabric. -- We invite contributions from across a broad interdisciplinary field, including scholars and practitioners working in tourism and mobility studies, anthropology, geography, film and cultural studies. STIFTELSEN LARS HIERTAS MINNE: Bidrag till enskilda forskare. Stiftelsen tar emot ansökan från enskilda forskare till projekt inom alla ämnesområden. För närvarande utdelas c:a 6 miljoner kronor årligen till vetenskapliga ändamål, vanligen fördelade på anslag i storleksordningen 5.000 - 50.000 kronor. Den föreslagna finansieringen bör avse omkostnader för projektets genomförande. Stiftelsen lämnar endast engångsanslag och binder sig inte för fortsatt stöd. Samma sökande kan tilldelas anslag vid högst tre tillfällen. Tryckningsbidrag till doktorsavhandlingar beviljas endast i undantagsfall.
