The annual Symposium of the Nordic Association of Architectural Research presents key note speakers Jonathan Hill, Roemer van Toorn an Fredrik Nilsson among others who reflect upon research in architecture and design. With the symposium the Nordic Association of Architectural Research, the Danish Doctoral Schools of Architecture & Design (DKAD) and the Aarhus School of Architecture will discuss how research and the PhD programme have evolved in recent years to become an integral part of the profile of the Nordic schools of architecture and design. -- When architects and designers ... Historically, there is a clear discontinuity between the fundamental architectural and design education and the subsequent research education. Whereas basic education appears to be practice-oriented, workshop based and uses drawing and models as the primary forms of communication, the dominant model for the PhD program is a text-based work in accordance with university standards. Considered in the context of those standards, it has thus been a controversial type of research that has represented the academic culture of the schools. The controversy has not completely disappeared today, but with the diffusion of an increasingly differentiated and complex understanding of architecture and design concept, the methods and models for research in this area has become more diverse in recent years. This is reflected both in the academic work and the rapidly growing interest in design-based research methods. In light of this development, the aim of the conference is to clarify the status, potentials and challenges for the design and architecture-based doctoral education. We hope that the conference will bring together a wide range of researchers, not least research students, who - implicitly or explicitly - are working on these issues and at the same time will provide an overview of the current state of research education at the Nordic schools of architecture and design. It is also our hope that the conference will be followed by a Nordic network for the continued sharing of experience and development of discussions related to the theme. -- The conference takes place 4–6 May 2011 in Aarhus Denmark at the Aarhus School of Architecture. The symposium language is Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and English.

LECTURES
CHISINAU: VISIONER OCH SAMTAL OM EN STAD I OMVANDLING
Färgfabriken gästar med New Urban Topologies
Torsdag 14 april kl 17.00
Nu har diskussionerna samlats i boken New Urban Topologies: The Chisinau and Minsk Experience.
WORKSHOP
International workshop on participation in urban planning and design: 5-6 May 2011, Uppsala, Sweden. The Cemus Research Forum – CEFO – at CSD, Uppsala University and the Research School for Architecture and Planning of the Urban Landscape – APULA – at SLU, is pleased to invite researchers from different disciplines to share ideas and experiences from research in a two-day workshop around the topic of participation in urban planning and design. This initiative emerges from the need to critically discuss the role that participatory processes are currently having in the planning, design and management of our cities. The thematic focus of the workshop is PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEXT OF DIVERSITY, CONFLICT AND POWER. The need of involving different actors in planning and design processes has been significantly mainstreamed into today’s urban policies and is considered a key factor in the achievement of a sustainable urban development. However, the involvement of more actors to the planning and design processes of our cities means also greater challenges to the ways in which their multiple and many times conflicting voices are included in the decision making processes. Hence “diversity”, in terms of rationalities, discourses, perceptions, values and interests, and how to deal with such diversity in the presence of conflict and power relations can be considered as one of the most important questions of any planning and design process. Such situation can be easily seen in the different interpretations of how to reach a sustainable urban development and the varied views that people have to the environment (natural and built) and thus their relations to it. The International Workshop on Participatory Urban Planning and Design intends to create an arena in which these concerns can be discussed.

DISABILITY AND PUBLIC SPACE,
The Disability Studies working group at Oslo University College is going to hold an interdisciplinary conference. Dates: April 28-29, 2011. Location: Oslo University College, Oslo, Norway. Host and sponsors: Oslo University College (through the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Urban Research program), The Research Council of Norway (through the Rehabilitation as Conflict project), and the Fritt Ord foundation. -- Background and themes: Disability, accessibility and the right to participate fully in all aspects of life are becoming increasingly prominent topics in a variety of disciplines. The conference aims to explore these topics from a variety of perspectives, bringing together researchers and professionals from the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and urban studies. The background for the conference is partly the expansion of interdisciplinary research on disability, including cultural, historical and interactional studies, and partly the increase in legislative initiatives, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. A primary objective for the conference is to promote dialogue and research across both disciplinary and geographical boundaries. Plenary speakers include Professor Rosemarie Garland-Thomson of Emory University, Professor Susan Schweik of the University of California at Berkeley, and Professor Rob Imrie of King’s College, London. The interface between public space and disability needs to be more extensively explored in research that includes both empirical and theoretical studies. We encourage submissions from researchers in the humanities and the social sciences, law and the health sciences, as well as built environment engineering and urban planning. THE ECONOMY CONFERENCE, will be held at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University on 6th–8th July 2011. The word ‘economy’ first described the management of a household. It comes from the Greek oikonomia /oikous (house) and nemein (manage) but its description of domestic frugality bears little relation to the contemporary ‘economy’ of governments and financial markets. Economies and capital are central to the dynamics of construction and urbanism, in ordering and disordering patterns of production and consumption. Given the collapse and mismanagement of the larger households of our societies, is it not vital to now evaluate the multiple meanings and potentials contained within this word? This international conference contains papers that investigate economy under the following themes:
Dwelling and Economy; Economy and/of Means; Politics of Economy; Architecture and Capital; Defining Value. -- Further details can be found here: <www.cardiff.ac.uk/archi/economy>
