My research efforts are focused on understanding interfacial properties of hydophobins and mussel adhesive proteins. Both these classes of proteins are highly surface active. Initially, we focus on the fundamentals of the adsorption process. I am interested in adsorption kinetics, reversibility with respect to dilution, the effect of the nature of the solid substrate and on how flow affects the adsorption. To get further insight I will also utilize surface force techniques to characterize interactions between protein layers and between a protein layer and a bare solid surface. AFM will be used for determining the topology of the adsorbed layers. This work is carried out in collaboration with industrial partners, and in part in collaboration with the Corrosion Science Division.
