Abstract:

Kinetic energy recovery systems, KERS systems, are expected to be a
vital component in future hybrid electric cars. However, for the
system to be commercially advantageus it is necessary to develop a
fast charge/discharge battery. Charging times of 5 seconds would be
required, while fast charging of lead acid and li-ion batteries
normally takes one hour. Available KERS systems on the market thus use
over-dimensioned batteries, leading to excess weight and increased
long distance fuel consumption. Flywheels on the other hand have a
very high power to weight relationship, but their lifetime is limited
due to bearing issues related to the high spinning speed. A research
program is proposed where low cost magnetic bearings will be used in
flywheels which in turn will be installed in parallell with
conventional batteries thus reducing overall system weight
considerably.
