General Information
Introduction
The scientific and technical activities of Electric Power Systems cover development and application of methods for analysis, simulation and control of electric and integrated energy systems. This includes generation, transmission, distribution and use of electric energy in addition to operation and planning of electric power systems.
The Division
The research and teaching activities in this area started in the mid sixties under the leadership of professor Janis Bubenko Sr. The research group was formerly made an division in 1986, the same year as Göran Andersson was appointed professor and head of the division. The division has now about 17 people: One professor, one professor emeritus, one senior lecturer, three researchers, one secretary and eight PhD students. The total income of the year was 10.6 MSEK of which 4.1 MSEK were KTH grants (3.6 research grants and 0.5 education grants).
Education
We teach courses in the regular engineering program mostly to students in Electrical Engineering, but also to other students. The engineering education follows the central European systems with a 4.5 year program leading up to the degree "civilingenjör" (civ.ing.), which roughly corrresponds to an MSc in the US and British systems.
A one and a half year International Master's program in Electric Power Engineering starting at the bachelor level has recently been introduced. We also have a PhD program. The divison has graduated 35 PhDs and 11 licentiates since 1972. The PhDs and licentiates from the division can be found at various positions in industry and academia.
The total number of students participating in our courses is about 40 per year. During 2001 9 students made their final year projects (examensarbete) in Electric Power Systems.
All our courses have integrated laboratory exercises. The advanced courses also require a smaller project work.
We participate actively in international programs for student exchange. Every year we have guest students doing their final year projects at the division, and KTH students majoring in electric power systems are doing their final year projects abroad.
