Ring resonator refractive index sensor

In a joint project with the Industrial Microelectronics Center (now Acreo) a fibre optic refractive index sensing device for biomedical applications has been developed.

1995-1997

In a joint project with the Industrial Microelectronics Center (IMC, Now Acreo) a fibre optic refractive index sensing device for biomedical applications has been developed. It utilizes a silicon chip with optical waveguides forming ring resonators. When the laser wavelength is scanned, the resonators causes dips in the optical power transmitted through the device. The wavelength at which these dips occur is a measure of the refractive index of the substance in contact with the chip surface. With the waveguide materials used, the index resolution was found to be 5x10-6.

Measurement set-up of the fibre optic refractive index sensor
Scanning the wavelenth reveals resonances when the ring length is an integer number of wavelengths.
