About SIP

The Sound and Image Processing (SIP) Laboratory traces its roots to
the Speech Processing and Hearing Technology groups at the Department
of Speech Music and Hearing (TMH). The first group, established by
Prof. Bastiaan Kleijn in 1998, joined the Department of Signals,
Sensors, and Systems (S3, later integrated in the School of Electrical
Engineering) in the year 2000. In 2002, it was joined by the
Hearing Technology Group led by Prof. Arne Leijon, broadening the range
of research topics in the direction of hearing technology. A third
senior researcher - Markus Flierl - joined the group in 2008 and is
now Lektor in Multimedia Processing.

The SIP Laboratory conducts research in the fields of sound and
image processing. A significant component of the work is performed in
cooperation with industry and with research groups across Europe in
the context of European projects. Among our research topics are
speech, audio and video coding, quality assessment of speech,
hearing technology, signal enhancement, front-ends for speech
recognition, and facial expression detection. Source coding, signal
processing, and machine learning are fundamental tools in our
work. The group currently has 14 Ph.D. students.
