History and Theory of Architecture

History of Architecture is a division responsible for teaching theory and history of architecture at B.Arch, and M.Arch levels, and for PhD-studies in the subject. It is led by Professor Johan Mårtelius since 1993. The subject is part of the core-curriculum which gives good opportunities for integrating research and education. It also generally attracts public interest which gives ample opportunities for research dissemination through monographs, articles in the professional and daily, press, guide-books, exhibition-catalogues, and lectures.

Three main research directions have been developed over the last ten years: 1) Swedish 20th century architecture; 2) Architecture history in the light of globalization; 3) Conservation and heritage preservation (ideologies and practice). In all these areas the division teaches courses on undergraduate, graduate and/or continuing education levels, and has published books (PhD-dissertations mainly), articles and research papers. Since 2000 the division has produced 6 PhD diss. (2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007) and 2 lic.diss. (2001, 2006). The most recent externally funded project is "The Architecture of Stockholm Public Library" (2008-2010), led by Associate Professor Anders Bergström.
