Departments at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering
Chemistry
Chemistry is one of the fundamental natural sciences, and the base for development of many topics in physics, material science, biology, environmental science and medicine. In addition, chemistry is an important resource that, by offering a common language, vitalizes the interaction between different fundamental, applied, and engineering aspects within the general chemistry area. The research at the department is extensive and covers a wide range of important chemical problems.
Chemical Engineering and Technology
Our research is focused on some major themes: manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, functional surfaces, environmental technology and energy conversions. Chemical engineering and technology combines fundamental chemical knowledge with engineering tools in order to bring new products and processes into the market. The work is combining experimental activities with advanced modeling. The approach is very useful in the analysis of complex processes and systems, and can therefore be used to study many different types of systems, man made as well as natural. Undergraduate and research students trained at the department can therefore be found in many different branches, quite often far outside the classical fields for chemical engineering and technology.

Fibre and polymer technology
The department of Fibre and polymer technology has a broad programme in undergraduate as well as graduate education. The common factor is the large molecule, both biopolymers, mostly cellulose, as well as synthetic polymers and the department teaches and do research in areas ranging from synthesis and characterization to processing of polymers and studies of paper and pulp.
