Project Title

Protein-Based Adhesives

Research

The objective of this project is to develop protein based adhesives for particleboard, flooring, furniture and etc. The aim is to understand the relationship between the chemical composition of a protein and the mechanical properties that are obtained when the protein is used as an adhesive. Different proteins have different compositions and therefore different properties and possibilities for reaction with other components.

At this moment soy protein isolate and wheat gluten are being investigated. When creating an adhesive, some points to keep in mind are the solubility of the protein, the dry content and the viscosity of the adhesive. For that reason it very important to explore different denaturation agents, such as the pH, temperature and chemicals.

Collaborations

The project is conducted in collaboration with Casco Adhesives, Lantmännen, SP and BioVelop.
