Properties of Humic Substances in Inland Waters

Properties of Humic Substances in Inland Waters

Humic material is studied to better understand the transport, storage and availability of nutrients and poisons in natural waters. We have investigated humic material from a brown water lake, Snuggan and also from podzolic soils. It was found that in certain cases solid particles predominate and otherwise a colloidal phase is the main form. Supersaturation often occurs. The acid base properties of the solid phase is very different from that of the colloids. The different forms of the humic material as a function of DOC, pH and salinity has been studied. The results have implications for the transport and storage of metal ions and small organic molecules in natural waters.
