European PhD School in Smart Electricity Grid and Storage

Smart Electricity Grids and Storage is one of seven tracks of the KIC InnoEnergy PhD School, within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). In line with the European goals, PhD students at KTH EE are expected to be the prime developers of the smart electricity grid and storage systems of the future.

This track is directed by Nathaniel Taylor at KTH School of Electrical Engineering (EE). 

The KIC InnoEnergy PhD School provides enhanced innovation-oriented PhD education, for competitively selected PhD students at InnoEnergy partner universities. It includes high-level education in business and entrepreneurship, as well as experience of working in other research organisations and the opportunity to meet with other Energy researchers. These activities are fully funded by InnoEnergy, and are provided as a supplement to the normal research activities at the student's university.

Basic requirement

The following extra activities are the basic requirement:

  •  A total of three weeks of intensive courses in Business and Entrepreneurship, at the well known business school ESADE in Barcelona.
  •  6 months exchange at another InnoEnergy partner (university or other research centre) in another country than the student's home university.
  •  Attendence twice at the annual InnoEnergy PhD Student conference, where students from all the tracks of the InnoEnergy PhD School meet and present their work.
  • Integration of the student's research in one of the InnoEnergy Innovation projects, in which university and industry partners work together to research and commercialise new products and services.

Optional benefits

As well as the above, the following benefits are provided as options:

  •  Introductory courses in other aspects of renewable energy technologies.
  •  Internships at sponsoring companies.
  •  Access to specialised technical courses provided by other InnoEnergy partners.
  •  Payment of costs associated with collaboration with other InnoEnergy partners.

Duration of track

As the track provides basically "add-on" activities above the normal PhD programme, the duration depends on the university of the PhD studies. The InnoEnergy PhD School defines obligatory activities (see above) that the students must have done, as well as fulfilling the university's requirements.

Students

The track in Stockholm, KTH EE, runs for four years, 2011-2014. By 2014 Smart Electric Grids and Storage aims at recruiting 80 PhD students.The track currently includes eighteen students, some at KTH EE and some at other KTH Schools, Uppsala University and AGH in Poland.  Further intakes of students in 2013 and beyond will increase these numbers significantly.

Application

PhD students from any InnoEnergy university is welcome to apply, as long as you  are working in relevant subject area.
