Big Data is the concept of gaining information from such volumes of data (petabytes, hexabytes etc) that are large enough to not confer information to a human. Examples of such data volumes are, e.g., all documents on the Internet, the human genome, or all train journeys in Europe during a year. The current rapid development in data volumes in many fields of science and application means that Big Data research is essential today, and will become even more essential in the future.

There is currently activity in Big Data at KTH in a wide variety of areas, such as modeling of the human brain, sentiment analysis from Twitter feeds, and modeling the energy consumption in a city.
