Bibliometrics at KTH
During recent years there has been an increasing interest from the managements of the Swedish universities for follow-up studies and analyses of the scientific publishing of their organisations. Organisational units for publication analyses and bibliometrics have therefore been established at a number of Swedish university libraries. The unit for Publication Infrastructure (PI) at the School of Education and Communication in Engineering Sciences (ECE) is the organisational foundation for publication analyses done at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).
Assignments
- Yearly reporting of KTH scientific publishing to the ministry of education
- Delivery of bibliometric indicators for the KTH Schools to be used in the strategic dialogue between the KTH central management and the deans of the Schools
- Production of bibliometric reports for KTH Schools and research groups for the internal dialogue and organisational development at the Schools
- To assist the university management in the assessment of external bibliometric analyses and ranking lists based on bibliometric indicators.
A Bibliometric Centre
Bibliometrics and publication analysis are activities with high priority at KTH. Therefore, the ECE School has set as one of its goals to establish a service centre with a bibliometric system based on worldwide bibliometric data licenced from a commercial vendor. The centre is planned to cover the needs for advanced bibliometric analyses both centrally at KTH and at the KTH Schools. In parallel with the in-house bibliometric services the ECE School is aiming to establish activities for education and research in the area of bibliometrics.
The long-time plan for the ECE School is that the education and research in bibliometrics should be a part of the activities of a KTH bibliometric centre. The bibliometric centre at the ECE School should thus act both as an internal service centre for KTH and a Swedish national centre for education, research and bibliometric consulting aimed towards other Swedish higher education institutions.
Research in Bibliometrics and Scientific Communication
To establish activities in bibliometric research and development of new bibliometric methods will be a long-time goal of the ECE School. The planned bibliometric system, containing worldwide bibliometric data, will be a valuable tool for the development of new bibliometric techniques and indicators, and for doing research on the bibliometric input to research policy.
Since the introduction of the Internet, the printed scientific printed communication has been set into flux. The traditional reader-pays model for scientific journals is being replaced by a producer pays Open Access model with an ever increasing pace. Traditional article-based publishing is replaced by blogging and Twitter flows, and the reviewing process is beginning to take on new forms as for instance open reviewing online.
The study of these new forms of scientific communication will also be targeted by the research in scientific publishing by the ECE School. These new forms of publishing will also create demands for new forms of publication metrics, thus creating an interaction between the study of new publication forms and research in bibliometrics.
