Impact Factors for 2011 now in Journal Citation Reports

Published Jul 04, 2012

The Impact Facors for 2011 for journals in the Journal Citation Reports were released by Thomson Reuters a few days ago. This years list contains 10 677 journals from 2 552 publishers.

Facts: Impact Factor

The Impact Factor is the average number of citations a journal received per publication from the Journal Citation Report year to publications published the previous two years. Thus, the 2011 Impact Factor is based on the citations from publications published in 2011 to publications published in 2008-2009.

Interestingly, 51 journals have been excluded because of anomalous citation patterns. Likely, the journals contain unreasonable high proportion of self-citations. These journals will be reviewed by the JCR. The fact that such journals can be identified is very important and gives credibility to the system.

It is possible to search out specific journals in the JCR. Also journals within a subject area, a geographic area or from a particular publisher are searchable. The guide below shows how to find impact factors in the JCR.
