Courses

Can I drop a course that I am registered in?
If you want to drop a course and change to another one, it is possible to do so within three weeks from course start. In order to drop a course, you need to contact your programme coordinator who needs to deregister you from the course. Reimbursements are not applicable.

When three weeks have passed, it is no longer possible to be deregistered from a course, regardless if credits are reported in the course or not. If you choose a new course that will not be included in your degree, you are liable to pay additional fees for that course. See below for information on extra courses.

I want to take an extra course. Is it possible?
A course that will not be included in your degree is counted as an extra course. This means that you will be liable to pay additional fees for that course. The amount for each ECTS credit is 2417 SEK, except for courses in the subject area of Architecture that amounts to 4083 SEK per ECTS credit.

The extra course will be billed separately and needs to be paid before registration. Contact your programme coordinator for further information.

I want to take a language course. Will I have to pay additional fees for that course?

The course is conducted in the first study year. Participation is free of charge and the participants will not receive any academic credits after completing the course.

In addition, the Unit for Language and Communication offers a distance-learning Swedish course called SWELL-Open that is free of charge for all international students.

For all other language courses, if it counts as part of your degree, you do not have to pay additional fees.

However, if the language course is not counted as part of your degree, the amount for the language course is 2417 SEK per ECTS credit. The extra course will be billed separately and needs to be paid before registration.

To find out if the language course will be included in your degree or not, you should contact your programme coordinator or programme director.

How many credits do I need to pass in order to progress to the next semester?
All students enrolled in a two-year Master’s programme need to have completed 45 ECTS credits in the first year in order to progress to the second year. Students enrolled in a one-year Master’s programme need a minimum of 10 ECTS credits in the first semester in order to progress to the second semester.

If you are a student holding a KTH Tuition fee waiver you need to acquire a minimum of 45 ECTS credits in order to receive a continued waiver for the second year. If you are enrolled in a one-year Master's programme, you need a minimum of 10 ECTS credits in order to get a continued waiver for the second semester.

The KTH Tuition fee waiver will be withdrawn for the students who do not reach the required number of credits.

Students holding a scholarship from the Swedish Institute need to turn to the contact person at relevant school at KTH or at the Swedish Institute to find out what the requirements are.

Changing of fee status

My tuition fee status has changed. What do I need to do?
If your student status changes, you need to submit documents that certifies the change to: feesandscholarships@kth.se.

A change in status does not affect the tuition fee for ongoing semesters.

A change in student status will (from the following semester) lead to you no longer being eligible for the Student Offer (e.g. guaranteed accommodation, comprehensive insurance, primary health care, etc.).
If you have further questions regarding this, please contact the international study advisor: studyadvisor@kth.se.

Payment of tuition fees

What happens if I do not pay the tuition fee for the following semester?
A student who does not comply with the payment regulations will be suspended from further studies at KTH. The decision on suspension enters into force immediately and applies until full payment is made.

Students holding an accommodation through KTH will loose their tenancy contract. The same applies for the other parts in the Student Offer (e.g. insurance, primary health care, etc.) until the suspension has been reversed.

Am I liable to pay tuition fees if I get an approved leave from studies?
Students who intend to apply for approved leave from studies shall, in order to avoid liability to pay tuition fees, submit an application for an approved leave from studies to the student counsellor at relevant school no later than the deadline for payment of tuition fee. The same applies for students who intend to not complete their studies.

Exchange semester

I want to write my thesis work abroad. Can I do that within my Master's programme?
Students who, within their programme, wish to study abroad through an exchange agreement have to pay a tuition fee to KTH for the semester in which the exchange is taking place. For further information on exchange studies, please turn to the international coordinator at relevant school.

Students holding a KTH Tuition fee waiver or scholarship are not able to do an exchange semester abroad as stated in the guidelines provided at the beginning of the studies.

If you have a scholarship through the Swedish Institute, you need to contact them to to get information on their regulations regarding exchange studies.

Approved leave from studies

I have been approved leave from studies from my school. Am I still entitled to the Student Offer?
During the period in which you are having an approved leave from studies, you are considered as a non-active student. For this reason, you are not entitled to the Student Offer during this period. This means that the comprehensive insurance FAS+ does not apply, why it is important to make sure that you have sufficient insurance coverage until you resume your studies at KTH.

In addition, the accommodation contract will be cancelled.

Prolonged studies

What if I do not finish my studies on time? Will I have to pay additional fees then?
You only have to pay for a course once and have the right to complete the started studies for which tuition fees have been paid.
It is however important that you contact your coordinator and/or programme director to get information on how to arrange your studies in order to get your degree.

Please note that the maximum length of stay with a KTH contract is two years for students enrolled in a two-year Master's programme. Students enrolled in a one-year Master's programme are guaranteed accommodation for up to one year. If you plan to stay longer, you are strongly advised to register as soon as possible at www.sssb.se (Stockholm Student Accommodation).

The same applies for the Swedish State's Insurance for fee-paying students (FAS+). For the extended study period you need to purchase insurance coverage by yourself.

In addition to the regulations at KTH, there are regulations regarding study achievements for the extension of the residence permit which you have to keep in mind. For further information on the requirements, please visit the website of the Swedish Migration Board.

Accommodation

Are there any requirements for getting an extended tenancy contract through KTH Accommodation?

For how long am I able to keep my accommodation through KTH?
