Living in Sweden

Stockholm - a city on islands

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden with some 1.8 million inhabitants. Known as a clean and safe city, it is located between the lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea in the middle of the country.

Even if it has a long history – in 2002 the city celebrated its 750 anniversary – Stockholm is an innovative hub where new attractions and activities constantly are emerging.

This is the heart of Swedish trade and business life. Many of the major Swedish multinational corporations are headquartered here, often based on inventions once made by Swedish engineers.

Stockholm's location, situated on islands, means that you are always nearby water. This offers spectacular views and outstanding activities, such as fishing right in the centre of the city, sailing in the summer and ice-skating in the winter in the large archipelago outside – often described as a unique natural experience with its more than 24,000 islands, of which some 150 are inhabited year-round.
