Curriculum and course descriptions:

2012/2013

The SELECT Masters programme starts from the concept of basic renewable energy sources (sun, wind, geothermal) and considers the pathways towards a future sustainable energy system. The SELECT curriculum rests on a strong foundation in thermal sciences, emphasising the thermodynamic tools of exergy and thermoeconomic analysis.

SELECT gives its graduates the high competence and qualified engineering skills needed to make a difference in this field. A close connection with industry is a hallmark of the entire programme and it is one of the few engineering programmes with a clear focus on entrepreneurship and business.

Programme outline

SELECT is a cooperation between seven universities and their associated industry partners. The programme contains a mandatory mobility between year 1 and year 2 and students spend the first two semesters at KTH, UPC or TU/e on courses in sustainable energy conversion, renewable energy and environmental pathways. This is then followed by a specialisation at Aalto, PoliTo, IST, AGH, TU/e, KTH or UPC in year 2.

The second year of studies includes the MSc thesis project often in an industrial setting in common supervision with researchers from any of the participating universities. The programme offers extended industrial contacts integrated throughout the whole programme, and especially as part of internships and seminars/workshops. The curriculum is highly integrated, first of all regarding to student and teacher mobility for certain common lectures, but also related to the extended use of remote teaching by the specialist teachers at all seven universities, in conjunction with “face-to-face” and “virtual” interactive workshops and project courses. The programme offers a unique, modern and highly interactive learning material which enhances the student learning process.

Spring seminar

Each year, a spring seminar brings together first and second year students from all partner universities. The event introduces participants to the cutting-edge research found in the curricula, and trains them in group discussions in an international setting.

Course overview

Master's thesis

The thesis will be performed during the 4th semester. The topics for the Master’s thesis are in the field of Energy for the Future and are carried out at a company or partner university.

Career prospects

The SELECT programme gives you the best possible foundation for a career in sustainable energy. After graduation, you will be able to analyze, develop and implement the advanced innovations needed to realize a sustainable path towards our future energy system. In addition, the built-in mobility enhances the cultural awareness and adaptability of all participating students. These are highly sought-after attributes in the global job market of today. As a graduate of SELECT, you are employable within a wide range of industries, you possess the potential to start your own innovative business venture, and you have the investigative skills to continue your research studies towards a PhD.
