Frequently Asked Questions
What is SELECT?
It is a two years Erasmus Mundus Master's Programme in Environment and Energy systems given by Five partner universities in the field.
How is the mobility scheme organized?
The first year students start at KTH (Stockholm, Sweden), UPC (Barcelona, Spain) and TU/e (Eindhoven, the Netherlands). According to the specialization option, the students are at one of the other partner universities during their second year of studies. The student performs his/her thesis project either at one of the partner universities or at industry supervised by one of the partner universities.
How does the credit system work?
Students are expected to successfully complete a total of 60 ECTS credits per year. All academic achievements are assessed using the European Credit-Transfer-System (ECTS): 60 credits have to be earned during the first year, 60 credits during the second year (including the completion of a Master Thesis)
What is ECTS?
European Credit-Transfer-System (ECTS) is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS-credits that are equivalent to 1500–1800 hours of study in all countries irrespective of standard or qualification type and one credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of work.
I have questions / problems with web-based application at www.universityadmissions.se, what should I do?

Can students apply to SELECT through the European Commission?
No. The only way to apply to the Programme or the scholarships is through the online application process indicated in the SELECT Programme webpage.
Can the certifications and statements of transcripts or degrees be made by professors or the head of departments?
No. Certifications made by academic staff will not be accepted. Instead, the papers must be stamped and signed by the degree administrations office or the like.
What are the selection criteria?
The selection process is based on a total evaluation of the following: University, Grade Point Average, course work related to the programme, motivation letter, working experiences and references and educational background. You may be called for a telephone interview as a supplement.
When and how will I know if I am accepted to SELECT and if I am granted a scholarship?
You will receive a notification of acceptance in March and a scholarship letter around late spring.
I had one unpleasant experience where the shipment of my English proficiency test took quite a long time, so can I send the scanned version of examination report while waiting until the authentic score report arrive at KTH?
Yes, you can do so. But it’s not a waiver for direct report from the test centre to the KTH Admissions Office.
I am now studying at the third year of engineering. Am I able to apply for selection this year?
Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply and can, if considered qualified, receive a conditional offer. If this applies to you, you should include a written statement from the degree administration’s office (or equivalent department), confirming that you are enrolled on the final year of your education and giving your expected completion date. If you receive a conditional offer, you should present your degree certificate to the Admissions Office before enrollment at the latest.
Is there a specific format for the C.V., letters of reference?
No. There is not a specific format. However, you can find directions on how to prepare the documents in the file named " SELECT Documents directions".
Is there any limitation for the maximum number of Erasmus Mundus programmes that I can apply for?
Yes. The maximum number of EM programmes that you can apply to is three, but you can not apply for more than two EM programmes with KTH as the coordinator. It means that you can have two out of your three choices with the EM programmes coordinated by KTH and your third choice can be with an EM programme offered by other universities or an EM programme with KTH as the participant. For the list of EM programmes that are coordinated or participated by KTH refer to Erasmus Mundus.
I would like to apply for SELECT programme as well as other programmes that are offered at the Department of Energy Technology like SEE, ISEE, etc. Can I apply for all of them?
You are able to apply for SEE and other programmes offered by KTH in the regular Master application period that opens on December 1 on university admissions website. Please note that SELECT is an Erasmus Mundus programme with its specific admission requirements and application procedure. For other programmes at KTH, refer to their webpages and follow their instructions.
I have previously participated in an EM master's programme and received a scholarship. Can I still apply to SELECT?
You may apply, however you are not eligible for receiving an EM scholarship since:
Individuals who have already benefited from an EM master's programme scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another master's programme.
From the programme description it seems that the programme may be more related to mechanical engineering than electrical engineering. I am wondering if the programme covers fields like impact of renewable energy on electrical system, grid integration of renewable energy sources?
Yes, as outlined in the programme description, there is one field of specialisation in Electrical Systems offered by partners PoliTo, UPC, or TU/e from semester three (second year) onwards. Example of courses given in these specialisation are Electricity Production Systems, Hydroelectric Systems and Power Controls of Renewable Energy Systems.
I want to apply for two Erasmus Mundus programmes at KTH. These programmes are SELECT and THRUST. Do I have to submit two set of documents, one for each programme, or only one package will be sufficient for both? Do I have to send two sets of transcripts?
You only need to send one set of the documents that are required by the two programmes (such as degree certificates, English proficiency certificate, etc), but please note that the required documents are specific for each programme and that you need to fill out the complementary application form for each programme separately.
Please send your documents to the adress on the cover sheet.
As a student who has received the personal registration number in Sweden, do I need to add the cover sheet with my application documents as you demanded on your website? I have learnt from VHS that the student with a Swedish registration number do not have to send the coversheet as part of the application documents.
No, there is no need for a cover sheet if you have the civic registration number, but please write your civic registration number on your documents.
Is an English student ID card (From a Turkish University) acceptable as the identity document instead of the passport?
We would prefer all applicants to send their passport, but if this is not possible another form of identification can be used. We would not find an applicant ineligible for sending a student ID, but we would perhaps not find it to be sufficient to prove neither identity nor nationality.
I have a TOEFL degree with total score 237 that is 3 years old (2006). I was wondering if I can submit this to prove my proficiency in English or I have to be test for this exam again.
We will accept tests that are taken three years ago, however we must have the test score report sent directly from the ETS and as far as we know they will not send or verify test results older than two years. If the ETS will not send a score report, then unfortunately you will have to take a new test.
I have all my required documents ready except my TOEFL scores. Can I submit my TOEFL score after the deadline?
No you cannot submit your TOEFL-score after the deadline.
English proficiency is one of the first aspects to be evaluated. Your application will not be taken to the second evaluation round, if the English requirements are not fulfilled.
Please note that the proof of English proficiency can not be delayed in fairness to everyone.
I wonder how to submit my IELTS test result: do I ask my test center to send it to you, or should I send an attested copy?
You can send a copy of the IELTS result together with your other documents. The copy does not have to be attested. KTH admissions office cooperates with IELTS to confirm the results.
Where do I send my documents?
Send the complete application package to the address given on the cover sheet.
I want to know the study and research area of the "Solar System" specialization. Is this about photovoltaics pv or solar thermal systems?
The areas of specialization with regards to solar systems are planned to include both solar thermal, and Solar Electric like PV. Courses planned for semester three are for example: PV Solar Energy, Solar Thermal Energy, PV Systems, Power Electronics, Power Control in Renewable Energy Systems, etc.
I have applied for SELECT and my application number is:"*". I have sent my application package a week back. I would like to know if it was complete and if all the required documents are present.
This will be checked during the evaluation time as a part of the eligibility assessment. Therefore, you have to make sure by yourself before sending your application pack whether it is complete or not. All the required documents and the application procedures are clearly stated at the programme website.
If I apply for SELECT programme, does it mean that I used one out of my 4 possible choices at studera.nu for Master programmes to study in Sweden or not?
No. SELECT is an Erasmus Mundus programme with its own application process. Therefore, you have your four possible choices for applying to Master programmes at universityadmissions.se regardless of the Erasmus Mundus programmes (such as SELECT) that you may have applied to before.
Will an applicant need to pay any fees related to the administration of their application?
No. If you receive an email stating this, it is a fake email. Please do not pay any fees.
ETS asks for a classification of Department. The choices given by ETS do not have a Energy one. Should I choose the option of “ Engineering, other” or “other physical sciences” or “other department not listed”?
Please choose “other departments not listed”.
I have applied for some other Master program at universityadmissions.se before, so I have sent certified copies of transcript and degree certificate before. Is it possible to send only the additional files and not the files that I have sent before?
The application procedure for the Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programmes at KTH is different from the procedure for other Master’s Programmes in Sweden. Erasmus Mundus Master Programmes are organized by a consortium of European universities, and therefore the procedure doesn’t comply with the national Swedish application procedure.
If you want to apply for Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programmes and also for other Master’s Programmes, you can use the same user account for online application. But for Erasmus Mundus, it is required to send in all required documents regardless of previous applications.
I'm a Mexican engineering and I hope to apply for SELECT. I did TOEFL ITP last year and my TOEFL score was 603. Do I need to take the TOEFL test again? Can I send the result that I have?
Please note that neither TOEIC nor institutional TOEFL are accepted as sufficient proof of English proficiency.
English test results from TOEFL should be sent directly from the ETS test centre to KTH Admissions Office (institution code 7966, department code 99). Examinee score reports or photocopies are not accepted.
We will accept tests older than two years, however we must have the test score report sent directly from the ETS and as far as we know, ETS does not send or verify test results older than two years. If the ETS will not send a score report, then unfortunately you will have to take a new test.
I am a Chinese student who intends to apply for SELECT program. At Studera website, students from outside EU are asked to pay the application fee (900 SK). Should I pay for it? Or students applying for Erasmus Mundus Master Programs do not need to pay?
There is no application fee for SELECT and thus you do not need to pay any fee. But for applying to the regular Master Programmes at KTH, you will have to pay the application fee.
I would like to ask about the length of the motivational letter. Is it compulsory to respect the 250 words limit? Can I exceed from the word limit?
It is compulsory to keep the 250-word limit for the motivation letter. We are aware that this could be a little space for expressing everything, but the ability to express oneself short and concise is one of the aspects we are looking for.
How many applicants have passed the first round and how many of them will be admitted?
The number of applicants vary every year. Some applicants do not fill in the online form and thus are not considered. Some also do not meet the general requirements and are not considered as well. The number of admissions depends on each year batch, their level of competency and the minimum acceptable level for SELECT.
So it is not possible to mention a number for this question.
I have applied to SELECT and all my documents are complete. I have passed the first selection round but I am not qualified in the second round despite the fact that I am a top student from a top university who meets all the requirements.
I would like to know why I am not selected in the final round and what are my weak points. Am I in the reserve list?
Selection criteria are mentioned clearly on SELECT webpage under "How to apply", "Selection process".
The number of study places available for SELECT is limited and the application process highly competitive. The merit ranking is based on a total evaluation of the following: university, content of degree/s, study success, motivation letter, references, relevant work experience, publications (including scientific posters etc.) and proficiency in English.
Your application was evaluated together with a large number of applications. Based on this evaluation, your qualifications were not competitive enough as compared to the others. Those who are accepted in the reserve list are informed about being in the reserve list with their ranking place in the list.
