The Master’s Program provides the possibility to specialize within the fields of Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering, in both instances with a strong focus on developing the capability to integrate technology and societal aspects, such as environmental issues, sustainable development and social responsibility.

Programme in short

Admission requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) of at least 180 ECTS. Specific requirements as specified by each Master’s programme.
Degree awarded:
Master of Science (120 credits). The degree gives access to third cycle qualifications (doctorate).
Duration:
120 credits/120 ECTS credits (two years). The system is compatible with ECTS credits. It is a full-time study programme.

Career prospects

The Civil Engineering track offers you a future carrier devoted to the design, construction and maintenance of roads, streets, railway track, bridges and tunnels while the Architectural Engineering track gives the opportunity of a professional role in the engineering design and analysis of buildings with emphasis on the performance on a system level and in a life cycle perspective.

The building sector has a long term impact on the built environment and the Civil and Architectural program meets a well-recognized need for engineers with the knowledge and ability to design and construct infrastructure, residential housing and workplaces with an optimal technology in terms of economy and environmental impact. We are convinced that the Civil and Architectural Engineering Master’s program will provide its graduates with internationally demanded competence with a great future value.

The students will be well prepared for a professional career as a consultant and in the construction industry as well as at public authorities, such as the Road or Rail Administrations. Furthermore the students will be able to pursue an academic research career.

Programme outline

The program starts with more fundamental compulsory courses while moving towards elective courses and more advanced knowledge throughout the programme.

The Civil Engineering track is devoted to techniques for designing, constructing and maintaining roads, streets, railway track, bridges and tunnels while the Architectural Engineering track is concerned with the engineering design and analysis of buildings with emphasis on the performance on a system level and in a life cycle perspective.

Degree project

The Master’s thesis is to be about an interesting issue within the field of study, with focus on the investigation and analysis of a problem. The findings should be of interest to the professionals involved as well as a wider audience. The assignment may deal with problems from the industry or issues that are relevant to research within the fieldsof Civil and Architectural Engineering.

The degree work should be carried out in accordance to the rules and guidelines of KTH concerning the scientific and engineering content as well as the process and presentation. The student must document and address the work to an audience while fulfilling stringent formal requirements on structure and language. The student should show awareness of societal and ethical aspects, including economical and social issues and ecologically sustainable development.
