Master's programme in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure

Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure provides the tools to solve future’s environmental problems and water issues. Our courses in, for example, environmental assessment and water resources engineering prepare students for careers as environmental engineers. Students will increase their understanding of the properties and functions of waters and ecosystems, learn how to assess the local and global environmental impacts of human activities, and apply advanced methods, techniques and modelling tools to describe, quantify and solve environmental problems. The scope of the programme is international and interdisciplinary.

Career prospects

Our society has major challenges in managing a changing climate, developing and securing good water quality, developing systems for recycling materials and nutrients, and developing renewable and environmentally smart energy solutions.

The needs of environmental engineering expertise are therefore almost endless, and the labour market is very diverse. You will be able to work privately and publicly, e .g. in environmental consultancies, contractors, energy companies or government agencies, internationally, nationally, regionally or locally. Some examples of employers who hired students from this programme are SWECO, Stockholm Vatten, WSP, Swedish EPA, Tyréns, Geosigma, Ramböll, Vattenfall, and SIDA, as well as a number of international agencies.

Programme outline

To enable students to specialize in sub-disciplines, the programme contains seven course sequences. Each sequence contains three or four courses that are recommended for a certain specialization and the student can follow two such sequences in full. These are:

1. Water Technology; water systems, hydropower, effects of climate change.
2. Environmental Geotechnology; contaminated areas, environmental geology, geotechnical aspects
3. Water and Wastewater Engineering; managing our water resources (drinking water and wastewater)
4. Environmental Management and Information; environmental monitoring, measurement techniques
5. Sustainable Infrastructure; managing infrastructure and natural resources in a sustainable way.
6. Environmental Systems Analysis; environmental assessment, life cycle assessment
7. Sustainable Societies; social and economic mechanisms that affect sustainable development

Degree project

The master's thesis comprises 30 ECTS and provides students with the opportunity to investigate a problem in depth under the supervision of experienced practitioners and researchers. The topic for the master's thesis should be within the scope of the programme and relate to knowledge acquired in the courses. The thesis work is carried out in Sweden or abroad, and can be oriented towards research (e.g., laboratory / field work within a research project), towards technological development (at a company or organisation), or a combination of both.
