Master's programme in Mathematics

The master’s programme in mathematics is intended to provide broad competence in mathematics. Specializations are allowed from a wide spectrum, ranging from pure mathematics to a diversity of applications. The specializations are directed towards areas corresponding to research groups at the Department of Mathematics. Students may thus take full advantage of the broad spectrum of competence within Mathematics available at KTH.

Programme in short

Admission requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) of at least 180 ECTS. Specific requirements as specified by each Master’s programme.

Degree awarded:
Master of Science (120 credits). The degree gives access to third cycle qualifications (doctorate).

Duration:
120 credits/120 ECTS credits (two years). The system is compatible with ECTS credits. It is a full-time study programme.

The grading scale is:
A-Excellent, B-Very Good, C-Good, D-Satisfactory, E-Sufficient. No overall grade is given for a degree and students are not ranked.

Programme outline

The programme begins with a common block of courses, providing broad knowledge in Mathematics. These courses correspond to 45 ECTS. In addition to these courses, students may select courses corresponding to 45 ECTS among five specializations:

  • Mathematics
  • Mathematical statistics and financial mathematics
  • Computational mathematics
  • Optimization and systems theory
  • Discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science

Finally, a Master's thesis of 30 ECTS is performed in the area of the selected specialization.

Degree project

The degree project will typically be carried out within the specialization chosen, either internally with a research group at KTH or externally at a company. The results are presented in a master's thesis as well as in a seminar.

Career prospects

The programme may lead to an advanced industrial position or serve as a platform for continued graduate studies. Mathematics is becoming increasingly important in society. One important purpose of this Master’s Programme is to educate tomorrow's industrial mathematicians.
