Computer Science 120 credits
The programme is provided at the KTH Campus, Stockholm. These courses are conducted in Swedish. Next start is autumn semester 2012.
Jobs and the future
Computer systems are used in practically all organisations. They form a central part of company infrastructure and the public sector. New products and services are continuously made available and software development is a prerequisite for systems being able to function even better in the future.
The spread of technology means that a software developer is able to find employment in many different environments, as a consultant, in companies designing computer systems or software, or in company and government authority IT departments to give just a few examples. It is also possible to work in teaching or research or to work independently as a self-employed consultant. There are job opportunities in all industries, since all functions of society are dependent on computers and computer systems. It is possible to work both in Sweden and abroad.
The Programme
The programme gives a broad education in Computer Science and the opportunity for further studies and specialisation in the computer science field and includes methods science for the construction of computer programmes, comprising both a theoretical foundation and practical skills for the development of products and systems that contain computers and software.
Courses
Compulsory courses during the autumn term of Year 1:
Data Security
Artificial Intelligence
Internet Protocols and Principles
Advanced Algorithms
Scientific Methods for Computer Scientists
Compulsory Degree Project (30 credits):
A degree project, which is to be in the area of advanced computer science.
Compulsory complementary technology course:
At least one complementary technology course is to be included in the course programme. There is no specified number of credits for this course.
Recommended track (30 credits):
Besides the compulsory courses, a further 30 credits are required that are to be earned for courses in a sub-area of computer science. These may be within a recommended track or be selected by the student. However, in the latter case, the course selection is to be approved by the Course Director.
The following tracks are offered in the programme (recommended tracks):
• Autonomous Systems
• Data Security
• Industrial Information Systems and Control Systems
• Internet Technology
• Programme Systems Technology
• Language Technology
• Theoretical Computer Science
Elective courses
The remaining courses are elective.
Language of instruction
The Master programme is conducted in Swedish. However, some single-subject courses may be conducted in English. A great deal of the course literature is in English.
Degree Project
The degree project is to discuss an interesting problem in the field of study. The focus of the project is to be a survey and analysis of the problem. The solution to the problem is to be of interest to a wide public, not only the commissioning body. Students are to tackle the problem in some type of scientific manner and are to study the area carefully before starting work on the project. The project is presented in a written report and also verbally.
The subject of the study may be taken from business/industry, different organisations or research at CSC, KTH or another university.

Students on the Master of Science in Engineering programme where the Master programme in Computer Science gives entitlement to this degree
Students on the Master of Science in Engineering programme in Computer Technology and Information Technology at KTH must, at the start of the term, have gained at least 150 credits from years 1–3 including a Bachelor degree project and the above mentioned courses. They are guaranteed a place on the programme. Application forms are to be submitted 1–15 November.
Other students
Other students should apply at www.antagning.se during the period 1–15 April. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of places, then a selection will be made in accordance with the five categories in DIAK (Assessment by the university, Grades, Merit Subjects, Relevant work experience, References) with "Thesis proposal" and "Motivation for Study" omitted.
