Jun Xie, China
Software Engineer at ST-Ericsson
Former student at KTH, Wireless Systems Master’s Programme, 2007-2009

Why did you come to KTH?
I studied at the department of Electrical Engineering at the Zhejiang University and always knew that KTH is one of the best universities in the area of Wireless Systems. Moreover, KTH has close relationships with other universities and corporations and does not only focus on the theory in books but also the pragmatic applications in our daily lives. KTH is also the university in Sweden that has fostered the highest number of engineers!

How have you ended up at your current company ? Did KTH influence your current position?
Before finishing my Master’s thesis at Ericsson Research, I started looking for jobs that are related to wireless communications. Luckily, I got contacted for the current position, which is about the development of 3GPP telecommunication protocols. Definitely, KTH plays an important role, as I think that the courses and projects I have taken at KTH amount to a suitable background for this position. KTH has a very good reputation and the industry recognizes the education quality at KTH. On top of this, positive reference and recommendations from my KTH professor and my supervisor at Ericsson Research were helpful.

Why do you think you were hired?
In general, to be hired means matching the job requirements well and I am not an exception. I have shown the employer my educational background, past work experience and demonstrated that I can easily understand other people and make myself understood which is of great importance. Just like the project courses at KTH, my daily work involves inter-personal communications and discussions.

What is it like to work in Sweden?
I would say it is wonderful to work in Sweden and I really enjoy it. People respect each other and are professional. Most people are open-minded and willing to share knowledge with others. Also creativity and innovation is encouraged. Last but not least, we have roughly four weeks of vacation in a year, which can be a good balance between the work and the family.

Why is KTH a good university when you are looking for an international career?
KTH is an excellent technical university with a lot of well-known professors and researchers in many areas. Besides, its education is not just about theory, but also about the application in practice. Many research projects in KTH have co-operations with industry and mostly targeting solving real-life problems. In my case, the School of Electrical Engineering hosts research projects with other universities as well as companies like Ericsson. Therefore, KTH is a university full of international collaborations and opportunity. KTH offers a perfect combination of high education quality and intensive industrial engagements.

How is it evident that KTH has close cooperation and good relations with your home region?
KTH has academic collaborations with some Chinese universities, for example, exchange programmes between Zhejiang University and KTH. Also, KTH arranged information events in a few universities in China with the purpose of presenting KTH to Chinese students and researchers. I went to the event held at Zhejiang University and it was very helpful in getting to know KTH’s history and culture.

Your future plans?
My plan for the coming years is to continue working in the wireless industry and hope to get involved in broader areas so that I can get more experience in the field.
