Production of Architecture: Cities Are Made of This

Allmänna mål
1. Projektet ingår i studion Gestaltningsprocessen. The course is part of the Design Process Studio which aim is to develop new tools and methods for architectural design, and to create new forms of space.
2. Projektet syftar till ökad kunskap inom detta område och till fördjupad kunskap/färdighet inom arkitekturämnet som helhet. Projektet riktar sig till studenter som kan ha kommit olika långt i denna fördjupning och som därför även efter projektets slut kommer att ligga på olika nivåer.
3. Den enskilde studenten skall efter projektet ha redovisat en individuell utveckling av sina kunskaper och färdigheter inom studioinriktningens program och inom arkitekturämnet som helhet.

Kursmål - Course goals
1. The course aim to increase knowledge about how methods and tools to represent architecture also inform and influence the production of architecture and the understanding of space.
2. At the completion of the course, each student should be able to demonstrate developed practical skills and an extended knowledge in relation to the studio program and towards the practise of architecture as a whole.

Kursens huvudsakliga innehåll

The course cities are made of this aims to develop an understanding for alternative processes in the production of urban conditions. We will look into how non-planning and positions between fast forward late capitalism and residues of traditional planning methodologies have started to produce new understandings of our urban environment. We will introduce and propose new concepts and tools to work on topics of urban development. Away from traditional models of planning and ill-disguised cynical trends towards a more down to earth, active and participatory approach to urban and spatial questions. Each student will produce a concept for a project that can be realized with the help of the fellow students as full time co-workers and with a small economy. The most successful project (according to the teachers) will be built. The projects have to address ideas of media, organization, time, work-schedules, permissions as well as spatial, functional and aesthetic questions. The winning proposal will be under an open-source copyright, this means that everyone involved in the course can claim the project as their own. So it is less about competition and more about development and sharing.

Kursupplägg

The course will have a practical and a theoretical part. Practically there will be lectures and workshops, weekly tutorials, mid-review and a final review where each student individually, or in small groups, develop and present a project. In collaboration with the History of Art department at Södertörns Högskola there will be a series of lectures, seminars where specific architectural problems will be illuminated and related to theoretical discourses in art, literature and film. Basic architectural categories such as representation and construction will be discussed in relation to modern media theory, semiotics and psycho analyses. Another theme is architecture as aesthetic paradigm within philosophy and other artistic fields. A running theme is the ambition to try to connect theory to the everyday.

• PRO1 - Projektdel 1, 9,0 hp, betygsskala: P, F
• PRO2 - Projektdel 2, 3,0 hp, betygsskala: P, F

Projektet innehåller två delmoment: genomfört och inlämnat projektarbete (9hp) respektive godkänd slutkritik etc (3hp). I det första delmomentet ingår det en eller flera delinlämningar under projekttiden.

Krav för slutbetyg

a) Presentationskrav
Presentation requirements will be handed out at the start of the course.

b) Examination
80% närvaro. Studenten ska aktivt ha deltagit i ritsalsundervisningen och vid föreläsningar och seminarier etc., samt ha godkända deluppgifter och slutpresentation. Deltagande vid kritikgenomgångar är obligatoriskt.
Kompletteringskrav: Arbetet skall utföras, och i förekommande fall kompletteras, inom given tidsram. Se generella anvisningar.
(Grundprincip: Höstterminsprojekt skall ha blivit godkänt senast vid påföljande vårtermins slut; vårterminsprojekt senast fore påföljande hösttermins start. Materialet skall lämnas in minst en vecka dessförinnan.)
Projektet ska dokumenteras i en portfölj. Ritningar och samtliga analyser och modeller ska finnas med i dokumentationen. Processen ska redovisas.
