Learning outcomes

Students who have completed this course should be able to

•  Develop a holistic, synthetic understanding of new concepts in architectural technology

• Demonstrate the use of digital modelling software specified in the course programme literature for analysing and developing architectural design and for making informed design choices

•  Develop a critical understanding of the significance of such digital modelling software in relation to traditional modes of design and explain and evaluate this through written, aural and visual presentations

•  Demonstrate an ability to apply an interdisciplinary work method, including an exchange of data, knowledge and skills

• Demonstrate the ability to communicate design concepts clearly in architectural renderings, models, aural and visual presentations

Course main content

The Architectures of Interdisciplinarity Design Studio seeks a holistic synthesis of technological investigation and design, using projective and case-based learning to research the socio-technological implications of design strategies. Emphasis is placed on developing methodologies for testing projected proposals and for evaluating the relative value of quantitative and qualitative modelling. The fourth semester of the studio will integrate all studio concepts into the final design proposal, with opportunities for individual specialization. The final studio outcome will be completed design proposals coupled with documentation of research, including specific findings within the development as well as general research conclusions. For 5th year students this task can be selected individually, and should be developed as a preparation for the final thesis.

Disposition

Workshops in a studio,tutorials,seminars, reviews.

Eligibility

One year fully approved architectural studies at the advanced level, courses and projects.

Literature

Will be announced at the beginning of the course.

Examination

  • PRO1 - Project, 9.0 credits, grade scale: P, F
  • PRO2 - Project, 3.0 credits, grade scale: P, F

Requirements for final grade

At examination the student will be assessed on how she/he has fulfilled the “Learning outcomes”.

More specific course specific examination procedures to be announced at course start

80% attendance of all course events and pass level attainment in all studio assignments.

The studio presentation will be part of the future diploma portfolio and shall be delivered in an appropriate and fully qualified way.

During the second half of the Spring semester the 5th year students are to do a Thesis Preparation booklet.
Through the development of a ‘Thesis Preparation Booklet’ students will have developed a clear focus, thesis question, for their diploma project and will have the opportunity to build an architectural design research on a specific subject the students want to pursue further. The architectural design research, could have an architectural design agenda, technical/material agenda, theoretical or programmatic agenda. It is important that all material is processed by the student and brought together in a booklet. The Thesis Preparation is an opportunity for the students to develop specific techniques and skills as well as to formulate an architectural design ambition through design research.
Requirements:
A4 sized and bind ‘Thesis Preparation Booklet’ of 20 pages including text, images and drawings. The Thesis Preparation booklet shall be handed in to and examined by the studio teacher before the end of the project.
