The course focuses on water governance as a means to resolve/prevent water conflicts and achieve sustainable water management. Different approaches and instruments for effective water governance – economic (e.g. water valuation), institutional (e.g. privatisation, participation), legal (e.g. human rights approach), etc.; socio-cultural, gender, and other issues influencing water governance processes will be discussed.  

An assessment will be made, discussing the impacts of various water management scenarios, water laws, sectors and projects involved; and their relation to water governance in different regions. Recommendations will be made for using instruments that can improve water governance in the respective regions.

Lärandemål

After completion of the course, you will be able to:

- Identify main actors involved in water governance.

- Describe underlying factors for water conflicts at international, national and local levels.

- Identify different instruments for improving water governance.

- Explain how the instruments may be used to achieve sustainable water governance.

- Compare different water governance systems regarding the interaction between different actors.

- Reflect on water governance scenarios in the future for a chosen area.

Kursens huvudsakliga innehåll

The course focuses on water governance as a means to resolve/prevent water conflicts and achieve sustainable water management. Behörighet

Three years of academic studies in Engineering or Social Science,  AE2706 Integrated Water Resources Management or equivalent. Documented proficiency in English B or equivalent.
