Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The work content is designed individually from case to case, depending on the student's personal interest and direction, and availability of an appropriate task.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course the students should be able to

·         apply relevant knowledge and skills acquired in the technology area to a given problem

·         within established limits/framework, even with limited information, independently analyze and discuss complex issues, and deal with major problems at the advanced level in the technology area

·         reflect upon and critically review their own and others' scientific achievements

·         document and present ones own work, for a given target group, with the highest standards of structure, formality and language management

·         identify the need for further knowledge and continuously upgrade ones own skills

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

The equivalent of 240 hp (four years full time studies at university level) on an education equivalent to a KTH programme Masters of Science in Engineering - Biotechnology. Exceptions to this may be granted by the director of graduate and undergraduate studies after review of the application

Recommended prerequisites

In general, the major part of the studies, at least 240 credits must be completed before the diploma work may commence. It is incumbent upon the examiner to ensure that the student has adequate depth and substance in previous studies, relevant to the subject area, before the work begins. The director of graduate and undergraduate studies can grant waivers after review. The diploma work should normally be carried out during last years of studies

Literature

Självständig litteratursökning och studier inom ämnesområdet förutsätts. Examinator och/eller handledare kan föreslå lämplig litteratur.

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Grading scale

A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Examination

  • XUP1 - Project, 30.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • XUP2 - Final Report, 30.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

XUP1 - project planning. This includes an interim report to be carried out after about 20 weeks of work. Grade P/F

XUP2 – A final report will be produced as a scientific paper of high quality and presented orally. The report written in English, oral presentations may be in Swedish or English. Grade A to F

After 20 weeks of work, an interim report must be performed where it is possible to adjust the project plan and out line. Prior to this presentation an interim project report should be written, which is then discussed with the examiner. After approval of the interim report, 30hp are fulfilled. This is required for the final grade

The work is carried out individually.

The diploma work will be assessed according to criteria in the assessment areas, engineering skills, scientific content and presentation. The examiner determines the grade as a whole after the final thesis report has been reviewed for plagiarism. To pass the thesis the performance may not be failed on any of the three assessment criteria.
