FAD3114 Representation and Dissemination of Artistic Research 7.5 credits

The course aims to investigate and develop innovative strategies for representing and disseminating outcomes in artistic, design- or practice-based research. Through a critical investigation of the existing formats for representing academic research, as well as the modes established in design-based and artistic research, the course encourages students to explore and invent more specific and topic-related means for representing and disseminating their research. Seeking to expand the field of reference for how knowledge may be represented and disseminated, the course bridges across academic research and methods employed by contemporary artists and designers. The course combines visual and textual analysis with site visits, lectures and readings in alignment with the course participants´interest. Terms and concepts such as work, form, "gestalt", prototype, and model can be discussed and brought to bear in students to position themselves in relation to their own research practices.

The course functions as a forum for discussion and reflection on issues of representation and dissemination in and through art, technology and design. It is made up of 4-5 modules that focus upon the different strategies and methodologies employed by course participants

On completion of the course, the student should be able to participate in an initiated discussion on how forms of representation employed in research relate to norms, and on the significance of media or form in and for the dissemination of knowledge, with a particular focus on research in art, technology oand design. Through an engagement with a critical disourse on representation, the student should be able to evalutate and discuss different means for representing research in relation to content, method and modes evaluate and sicuss different means for representing research in relation to content, method and modes of inquiry. From the outset of the student´s own research, and that of other course participants, the student should be able to express - in theory and/or practice an indiviual standpoint concerning issues of representation and dissemination.

To be eligible for the course, students must have completed a masters´degree or have an equivalent level of education in technology, art or design (such as architecture, planning, civil engineering, design, arts and crafts, or fine arts) or affiliated subjects within the humanities and social sciences. The course requires a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 students to be held.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• DEL1 - Partticipation, 4.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
• INL1 - Hand in exercise, 3.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

The course is examined in two parts:

- Participation in seminars, presentations and/or workshops, including assignments (4 credits)
- Hand-in of final paper or assigned project work, to be presented at a final review (3,5 credits)
