ME1313 Industrial and Technical Transformation 6.0 credits

This is an advanced course in Industrial Dynamics focusing on mechanisms behind technical and industrial transformation. It is based on Shumpeterian and evolutionary economic theory. These theories are discussed from a qualitative standpoint.

Key words:

Advanced industrial dynamics, the role of R&D and science in innovation, non science based innovations, innovation indicators, knowledge formation processes/learning, innovation and economic growth, endogenous growth theory, innovation policy, evolutionary theory, institutional economics, systems of innovation.

Course contents

The course intends to provide knowledge of mechanisms and dynamic processes behind industrial and technological transformation. To achieve this, the course is built-up around three modules:

  • Lectures that should help the students to understand and be able to apply theories and models.
  • Assignments to learn to apply models and be able to critically reflect on analyses.
  • Seminars to help the students to reflect, discuss and debate their solutions to given questions and problems.
  • Written examination in the form of a test and a project report.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the students should be able to:

  1. describe and explain theories and models that are used in the research field industrial dynamics
  2. describe and explain the dynamic development processes in the Swedish industrial policy development
  3. explain models and concepts in strategic management of technological innovation work
  4. apply theories, models and concepts in a given empirical context experiencing industrial transformation
  5. describe and explain mechanisms and dynamic processes behind industrial and technological transformation
  6. critically reflect on a given analysis approach, analysis and its conclusions
