Intended learning outcomes

To present and discuss the many models of strategic management and to embed these into social and economic wholes, and further to show the connection between theory and praxis. Further still, to show the benefits of working with complex understandings of the socio-economic nexus in contemporary business practice, and the benefits of advanced theoretic understandings in developing strategy. Much of the course-work will consist of individual work with strategic cases, and a reflective practice of developing a personal approach to strategy-work.

After the course the student should be able to:

  • Describe and compare different perspective on organisations within business economy and leadership; structure, politics, human resource and symbolic perspective.
  • Describe the basic concepts within the perspectives mention above.
  • Use these concepts in an analysis of organisations and make a presentation
  • Use these concepts in an advanced discussion about business economy and leadership.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

18 hp advanced level courses at KTH-Indek or equal and ME2302/4D1113 Knowledge Formation in Technology and Natural Science as well as ME2305/4D1189 Managment: Traditions, Theories and Trends. They should be finished and passed, or equally courses.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

Active participation in the lectures, papers as assigned, final examination. The participants are assumed to actively partake in the readings during the course, and to be able to answer questions with regards to their contents. Participants are also assumed to have some modicum of intellectual curiosity and some propensity for critical thinking.
