Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Cell culture laboratory: equipment, appliances, consumables. Cell culture methods. Media and solutions. Contamination of cell cultures. Cell viability tests. Good cell culture practice. Ethical and sustainability issues related to the cell culture.

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • independently subculture an animal cell line 
  • describe the equipment, appliances, and consumables needed for cell culture
  • account for the different aspects of good cell culture practice
  • perform calculations necessary for a cell line propagation and for preparation of stock solutions

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

For single courses students, 120 hp is required in engineering and natural sciences or equivalent, as well as knowledge of English B or equivalent.

Recommended prerequisites

SK2530 (Introduction to Biomedicine) or SK2531 (Biomedicine for Engineers) is recommended, but is not a requirement.
