Information relevant for the EuroSPIN programme

Students not specifically selected for EuroSPIN might be able to participate and follow the programme as well, but on an individual basis. These students need to pay all the fees and participation costs requested by the respective universities, while stipends or employment contracts might be offered if the funding situation of the individual supervisors involved allows.

Below follows some relevant definitions.

This is defined as a Member State of the European Union, an EEA-EFTA State (i.e. Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein), Turkey, Switzerland, and the Western Balkan countries (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

These PhD candidates come from a country other that an "eligible applicant country", and who are not resident nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries. The only exception to this rule applies to Third-Country doctoral candidates who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus master scholarship in order to follow an Erasmus Mundus Master Course/Programme.

These are the doctoral candidates who do not fulfill the Category A critera defined above.

Who can receive a EuroSPIN scholarship?

Only candidates who have applied to and have been accepted by the EuroSPIN consortium, in accordance with its specific students' application and selection criteria, are eligible for a scholarship. Both category A and B students are welcome to apply to the EuroSPIN PhD programme.

How many scholarships are offered?

The EuroSPIN PhD programme has for 2010:

• 6 scholarships category A
• 4 scholarships category B

Scholarship rules and requirements:

• EuroSPIN PhD students need to spend their study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries; for category B students, these two countries must be different from the country in which the doctoral candidate has obtained his/her last university degree. The mobility period is, however, tailored to the specific PhD research project. There are in addition rules on time to be spent at the European (here Sweden, UK, Germany) and non-European (here India) partners.
• EuroSPIN students should participate in the PhD programme in accordance with the terms defined by an, for each student, individual Doctoral Candidate Agreement. Failure to do so could lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.
• EuroSPIN students’ scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the programme. On individual basis this might be changed due to maternity leave, chronic illness, etc.
• Students benefiting from an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate scholarship cannot benefit from another European Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus PhD studies.

How large is the scholarship?

Monthly allowances in the form of stipends (up to 1400 Euro / month) and/or employment contracts, if that is the rule at the particular university, will be provided to all successful EuroSPIN candidates during the first 3-4 years. This applies to both category A and B students.

In addition, contribution to e.g. travels to the yearly workshop, and some other types of participation costs (e.g. tuition fees, bench fees, insurances), are provided for up to a certain limit.

All students selected for the EuroSPIN programme should thus be able to participate, independent of the personal financial situation.

Fees and participation costs

Fees and other required participation costs to study for a PhD differ between the consortia partner universities. However, for PhD candidates selected for the EuroSPIN programme, participation costs and tuition fees will be provided for and thus waived. This applies in general for both category A and B students.

How can I apply for participation in EuroSPIN, including receiving a scholarship?

Students apply electronically to the EuroSPIN consortium. Based on these applications a the first round of selections are made, and competitive candidates are further interviewed on an individual basis.
