“[D]espite the fact we know very well (the ecological predicate that we are in), we continue to act as if we do not know”. - Slavoj Žižek, ‘Nature and Its Discontents’, SUBSTANCE 37, no. 3 (2008), p. 37.

The lecture will present the project Spatial Agency. Other Ways of Doing Architecture . It will discuss its theoretical foundations and will contextualize the research within the field of architecture, with a main focus on Western Europe, by critically positioning it as part of the wider forces of the architectural profession and architectural education of this particular geographical setting. Drawing on case studies investigated as part of the research, the lecture will position those examples within wider spatial discourse and particular calls for changes to the practice of architecture and the way architects are educated. Here, it will make particular reference to notions of social responsibility, ethics, environmental and socio-economic justice – which, as will be argued, could be contributed to by a revised understanding of architecture as spatial agency.

TATJANA SCHNEIDER
I am a researcher, writer and educator based at the School of Architecture in Sheffield , UK. I am co-founder of research centre ‘Agency’ and was founder member of the workers cooperative G.L.A.S. (Glasgow Letters on Architecture and Space), which aimed to construct both a theoretical and practical critique of the capitalist production and use of the built environment. My current work focuses on the changing role of architects and architecture in contemporary society, (architectural) pedagogy and spatial agency. I’m interested in employing and implementing theoretical, methodological and practical approaches that expand the scope of contemporary architectural debates and discourses by integrating political and economic frameworks that question normative ways of thinking, producing and consuming space. I am (co)author of Spatial Agency. Other Ways of Doing Architecture (2011), Flexible Housing (2007), A Right to Build (2011), (co)editor of Agency. Working with Uncertain Architectures (2009) and glaspaper (2001-2007).
