The use of environmental indicators is gaining importance as a tool for policy making and public communication in providing information on the environmental performance of e.g. countries and corporations. By conceptualizing phenomena and highlighting trends, the use of environmental indicators aim to summarise, focus and communicate complex environmental information to support decision making in order to reach sustainability goals. A number of initiatives exist on frameworks and typologies for environmental indicators, linking societal activities and environmental responses, as well as strategies for indicator formulation and aggregation methodologies.

This lecture provides an overview of these efforts. Examples of environmental indicators and frameworks used by the United Nations Environmental Programme, the European Environmental Agency, and other actors will be discussed, concerning issues such as ecosystem services and natural resources management. The lecture will also devote attention to the relation between today's relatively independent activities of research planning, monitoring, assessment, and decision support, and to demands on systems for better integration for societal learning and sustainable development.
