The talk will be focused on how the Russian invasion of Ukraine has highlighted severe environmental destruction and and whether this moment can serve as a momentum for international recognition of ecocide as a crime. Rinata will share early insights from her ongoing research project, Reshaping Ecocide in International Law: From the Russian Invasion of Ukraine to Global Green Transformations. Her work examines the evolving concept of ecocide, focusing on the distinction between wartime and peacetime ecocide, and how these two contexts intersect. Additionally, she will provide an update on the current status of investigations into ecocide-related cases in Ukraine offering a unique perspective from Ukrainian jurisdiction.

This talk aims reflect on a critical question: can war drive legal change?
