Getting a Personnumber in Sweden

A Swedish personal identity number is obtained when you are registered in the Swedish population register. To do so, you need to be admitted to studies that last for more than 12 months. So any of the exchange students or anyone with a Residence permit valid for less than 12 months is not eligible for Personnumber.

What is it and what is it used for?

A 4-digit number following your date of birth in the format: YYMMDD-XXXX

The personal identification number is obtained when a person is entered in the Swedish population register by the Swedish Tax Agency. It is widely used for everyday purposes in Swedish society such as setting up memberships and subscriptions, establishing a banking relationship with a Swedish bank, joining an insurance plan and will entitle you to the same patient fees as Swedish citizens for most public health care. You need to have a personal identification number to apply for a Swedish ID-card at the Tax Agency.

Temporary registration number (“T-number”)

The personal identity number issued by the Tax Agency should not be confused with the temporary registration number, a 4-digit number following your date of birth containing the letter ‘T’, given to you by KTH when you were admitted. Format of T-number: YYMMDD-TXXX

Who can apply?

International students who have a residence permit for at least 12 months or are admitted to studies for 13 months or more can apply for a Swedish personal identity number, personnummer, from the Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket. You need a registration certificate in order to prove that you are enrolled as a student in Sweden. You cannot apply before you have registered as a student at KTH at the beginning of the semester!

Please note! Students admitted to one or two semesters (= less than 12 months permission on your decision/residence permit) cannot apply for a personal identification number.

Master applicants for autumn 2017 received two Notifications of Selection Results. The selection result is published on your account at www.universityadmissions.se. The service offered at the KTH campus is expedited and is expected to take around 7 days to receive your personnumber. If you go to Skatteverket you will be in the queue with all other people applying in Sweden, but you are of course free to do as you wish.
