Cast iron conference in Argentina – day 3

Third day into the SPCI10 conference and today we listened to a panel discussion about future need in the field of cast irons. Companies and academia presented their opinions.

Fredrik Wilbersfors from Scania showed the future need within the heavy truck industry. Fredrik sees a need for light weight cast irons, alloy development to get stronger materials with improved thermal fatigue- and oxidation properties and production improvements. With both academia and foundries present, there were some good discussions and feedback. Ingvar L Svensson from Jönköping University addressed the importance of future research in solidification. For example, if we learn how to control the graphite growth we could design our dream materials. Ingvar also talked about methods to use the microstructure and mechanical properties to predict component behavior.

With many new research ideas circling in our heads, we were invited to the ranch “Estancia Santa Isabel” for an Argentinian barbecue where we could continue the discussions and enjoy the Argentinian culture. After the lunch we got to enjoy a horse show called Prueba de ride da.
