Water is so important and obvious to the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">safety<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of so many power plants<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">not only<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nuclear ones<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that it barely goes unnoticed. Indeed, the history of nuclear po<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">wer contains a striking<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">paradox. Water is the key to a normal functioning nuclear power plant and to preventing nuclear<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">accidents. Yet, up until now, the history of water is largely absent from the history of nuclear power<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and especially nuclear risk<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contrast, there is a long<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">standing scholarly tradition of studying<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nuclear fission and radioactivity.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page31R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"> <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"page31R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">But<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">this dissertation is about more than just water. By focussing on water streams for the analysis<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of nuclear safety, other relevant elements open up as<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">well. While water streams are essential, there<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is no nuclear power plant in the world that generates electricity because of it. Electricity is generated<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">because of the steam caused by the boiling of that water. The generation of steam is coupled to the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sc<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ience and engineering practice of thermal<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hydraulics<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a field with a long and important history,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dating back to the early days of industrialisation and mechanical engineering. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"page31R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">As I will show, much<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">engineering and political effort<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in the nuclear sector a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nd outside of it<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">has<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">been devoted to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">management of pressure and temperature in steam equipment, such as boilers and pipes. All of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">this was essential to prevent the pressure from mounting too high, causing catastrophic explosions.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In turn, the managem<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ent of all this water and steam is also very reliant on the material that this<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">equipment is made of. And that material is steel. A very robust material, steel is well<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">equipped to<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">withstand the tremendous pressures and temperatures necessary to generate pow<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">er. However, as <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page32R_mcid0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">almost any material, it can decay,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">crack,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">brittle, and break. A major theme in this dissertation<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">will therefore be the continued effort to improve and regulate steel<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2013<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and the work of metallurgists<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and material engineers in doing so.
