Nytt undervisningsstöd till lärarna och ett rektorsbesök
Nu är det ett år sedan covid-19-pandemin tvingade oss att ställa om till digital undervisning och ännu är det oklart när vi kan börja skruva upp campusundervisningen igen. Därför kommer jag att använda den här bloggen för att prata om det ökade stödet för onlineundervisning som vi infört för ITM-skolans lärare under vårterminen.
ITM E-learning-grupp
Mellan den 1 februari och den 30 juni har ITM-skolan anställt 7 amanuenser, dvs studenter som ska stötta i digitaliseringen av våra kurser. Detta ”E-learning-grupp” kan hjälpa till med:
- Stöd, hjälp och vägledning vid användning av KTH:s digitala undervisningsverktyg, som t.ex. Canvas,
- Introduktion och utbildning i verktyg som ökar engagemang och interaktivitet under onlineundervisning, till exempel föreläsningar i zoom,
- Bidra till produktionen av utbildningsmaterial för flippad utbildning,
- Kartlägga öppna frågor som kräver lite efterforskning, till exempel hur man kan förbättra kommunikationen med studenterna,
- Stöd med att skapa digitala undersökningar.
Däremot kan de inte hjälpa till med kurser som inte ingår i grundutbildningen (eftersom de finansieras med GRU-pengar), tillgänglighetsfrågor eller lära studenter hur man använder olika digitala verktyg.

Under vecka 11 och 13 har E-learning-gruppen genomfört fyra seminarier med fokus på interaktiv onlineundervisning och sidstrukturering i Canvas. För att kunna dela sina presentationer, andra dokument och kommande instruktionsvideor som de håller på att skapa, har jag initierat en Canvas-sida som heter ITM E-learning. Rektorsbesök på ITM-skolan
Slutligen vill jag berätta om några av de saker som presenterades och diskuterades under rektor Sigbritts besök på ITM-skolan före påsk (31 mars). Under detta onlinemöte beskrev alla prefekterna varje avdelnings samarbete och partnerskap samt forskning, utbildning och kommande utmaningar. Saker som nämndes:
- Institutionen för energiteknik (EGI) har aktiva forskningsprojekt med alla KTH:s skolor.
- Institutionen för hållbar produktionsutveckling (HPU) har ett starkt samarbete och synergifokus internt och externt (med till exempel Scania, AZ och SSCP).
- Institutionen för industriell ekonomi (Indek) har ökat antalet publikationer (i WoS) och antalet citeringar.
- Institutionen för industriell produktion (IIP) har ökat antalet kurser för KTH:s strategiska partners (DMMS, XPRES) och har fyra EU-framgångshistorier inom Horizon2020.
- Institutionen för lärande (LES) har fördubblat mängden extern finansiering sedan 2016.
- Institutionen för maskinkonstruktion (MMK) har flest sampublikationer tillsammans med industrin.
- Institutionen för materialvetenskap (MSE) har ett omfattande nationellt och internationellt samarbete med universitet, forskningsinstitut och industriföretag.
Rektor betonade att det är viktigt att KTH har adekvata experimentella inslag i våra ingenjörsutbildningar eftersom det är det som gör oss unika ur ett internationellt perspektiv.
Under mötet fick vi också universitetsdirektören Kerstins uppskattning för att ITM:s verksamhetsstöd är så stöttande till ett KTH, liksom hur ITM hanterat covid-19. Med specifika hänvisningar till såväl grundutbildning som forskarutbildning diskuterade vi hur lärarna på ITM-skolan har utvecklat och genomfört en helt ny utbildning (Tekniskt basår på distans), utvecklat smittsäkert laboratoriearbete på campus, ökat antalet kurser fokuserade på livslångt lärande och ökat mångfalden av sätt att examinera ITM:s kurser på. Sammantaget mycket intressanta och engagerande diskussioner.

New support for teachers and a president visit
Now it is one year since the covid-19 pandemic forced us to switch to online education and so far we don’t know exactly when we will be allowed to increase the amount of campus teaching again. So, because of this, I will use this blog to enhance the increased online teaching support that we have created for ITM teachers during this spring semester.
ITM E-learning group
Between February 1st and June 30th ITM has hired 7 amanuenses students in order to help us all in the digitization of our courses, and this ITM E-learning group can help you with:
- Support, assistance, and guides in the use of digital teaching tools chosen by KTH, such as for instance Canvas,
- Introduction and training on tools to increase engagement and collaboration during online teaching (for instance lectures in zoom),
- Contribution to the production of educational materials for flipped education,
- Investigating open questions that require some research (example: how to improve communication with students),
- Support with creating digital examination.
But they cannot help with courses that are not part of first and second-cycle education (since they are funded with GRU money), accessibility issues, or teaching students how to use different digital tools.

During weeks 11 and 13, the ITM E-learning group has conducted four seminars focused on interactive online teaching and Canvas course page structuring. KTH President’s visit
Finally, I would like to share some of the things that were presented and discussed during KTH President Sigbritt’s visit to the ITM School just before Easter (March 31). During this online meeting, all of the department heads described each department’s collaborations and partnerships as well as research, education, and upcoming challenges.
Issues that were raised:
- The Department of Energy Technology (EGI) has active research projects with all KTH schools.
- The Department of Sustainable Production Development (HPU) has a strong collaboration and synergy focus internally and externally (with for instance Scania, AZ and SSCP).
- The Department of Industrial Economics and Management (Indek) has increased the number of publications (in WoS) and number of citations.
- The Department of Production Engineering (IIP) has an increased number of courses for KTH’s strategic partners (DMMS, XPRES) and has four EU Horizon2020 success stories.
- The Department of Learning (LES) has doubled the amount of external funding since 2016.
- The Department of Machine Design (MMK) has the highest number of co-publications together with industry.
- The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) has extensive national and international collaboration with universities, research institutes, and industrial companies.
The president emphasized that it is important for KTH to have adequate experimental elements in our engineering educations because that is what makes us unique from an international perspective.
During the meeting, we also got the University Director’s appreciation that ITM’s Professional Support is so supportive in developing one KTH as well as both positive and negative consequences of the covid-19 pandemic on the first, second, and third cycle of education. With specific regards to the first and second cycle, we discussed how the teachers at the ITM School have developed and executed an entirely new education (Technical Preparatory Year on a distance) developed infectious secure ways to execute laboratory work on campus, increased the number of courses focused on lifelong learning and increased the diversity of ways to examine in ITM’s courses. All in all, very interesting and engaging discussions.
