Now we see the light in the tunnel

Dear colleagues,

From my point of view, we are experiencing the most beautiful season of the year. After a long dark winter, we can finally follow nature’s transformation from dark colours to green and other bright colours. (Even I can experience it, even though colour blind!). Currently, the fruit trees and especially the cherry trees are in full bloom. I love these trees, and I have six of them in my small garden. Their bright blooming represents the entrance to the brightest season of the year, where people like us that live up here in the “Northern part of the world” wake up and start to bloom again. The sun provides the energy for all of us to carry out our favorite summer activities.

Before all of you can start to enjoy the wonderful coming summer, there are, of course, a number of things to do. If you have not already planned your vacation together with your closest manager, please do as soon as possible. It is necessary for the management to make sure that we have a working KTH even though most of us will have vacation. For example, administrative issues such as paying out salaries, etc. need to function even during the vacation period. I also wish to mention that the President said that we need to take at least four weeks vacation during the summer period. We hear many people that wish to save as much as possible of their vacation, so that they can travel in the autumn when it becomes easier to travel. However, KTH cannot let so many people in the autumn when the campus will be full of activities. Thus, it is the duty of all of us to take the majority of the vacation during the summer when the KTH activities are the fewest.

There are also many other things that need to be done before the summer vacation period. The teachers are currently providing the last lectures and have started to prepare for examinations. Then, they need to grade the exams before the vacation can begin. Here, the collaboration with administrators that assist in setting up exams, reporting exam results, etc., is, of course, essential. It is also a trend that many Licentiate seminars and Doctoral defenses take place during the last weeks of the semester. I have heard that as many as 30 (!) Ph.D. defenses will occur during this spring semester, but I will let Mats fill in on more details regarding these accomplishments by the Ph.D. students and their supporting advisors in a future blog.

Make sure that you take enough spare time to enjoy this beautiful spring season because it is short but extremely beautiful!
